EURE – A Gates County man is hospitalized after being shot and then his vehicle set ablaze near here last night (Wednesday).

Gates County Sheriff Ray Campbell did not release the name of the victim.

According to Campbell, the victim was sitting inside his vehicle at around 11-11:30 p.m. that was parked on a path off Sandbanks Road. It was there that several suspects approached the vehicle and discharged their weapons.

“The victim was struck multiple times,” Campbell told the R-C News-Herald this morning. “The vehicle was then set on fire, but the victim managed to escape. The vehicle is a total loss.”

Campbell added that the victim then walked approximately one mile to a residence.

“He banged on the door there and the homeowner called us, letting us know there was a gunshot victim at their house,” Campbell stated.

The victim was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, according to Campbell. His medical condition is unknown.

As far as the suspects, Campbell said the victim offered very little information.

Campbell stated he has called the North Carolina SBI to assist in the investigation.
