WINTON, NC – Marshall Wayne Askew, 80, of 334 Tuscarora Beach Road, Winton, died Tuesday, January 5, 2021 in Vidant Beaufort Hospital, Washington, NC.

Mr. Askew was born in Bertie County on May 11, 1940, and was the last surviving of 11 children born to the late William Edward and Mary Elizabeth Hughes Askew. A retired maintenance supervisor with the Hertford County Manager’s Office, prior to that he served with the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office for 21 years where he was the Chief Jailer. Community service included his serving on the Winton Town Council, as Mayor of Winton, on the Hertford County Board of Commissioners, and with the Winton Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed membership in Holly Springs Baptist Church and the Winton Masonic Lodge #723.

Surviving are wife of 28 years, Kitty Jones Askew; and two sons, Douglas Askew (wife, Janice) of Ahoskie, and Gregory Askew (wife, Candice) of Huron, SD. Also surviving are Kitty’s sons, Ronald Taylor of Harrellsville, Danny Taylor (wife, Cindy) of Tunis, David Taylor (wife, Wanda) of Harrellsville, and Michael Taylor (wife, Jamie) of Conway. Marshall and Kitty shared 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, January 9 at 11:00 a.m. in Highland Memorial Gardens and will be conducted by the Rev. Joe Futrell. With the conditions and restrictions associated with the Covid-19 Pandemic, no formal visitation will be held, however friends are invited to visit with family at the gravesite following the service.
