Seven to be honored at HCC African American Heroes event, Feb. 25

WELDON – For the 14th year, Halifax Community College (HCC) holds it “Saluting Our Local African American Heroes” celebration.

Honors will be bestowed on seven community leaders on Feb. 25 during a virtual ceremony. The event will begin at 10 a.m.

You can register to attend by going to halifaxcc.edu and clicking on Black History Month to fill out the registration form.

This year’s hero honorees include:

Tony Brown, Halifax County Manager

Tony Burnette, Interim Emergency Management Coordinator for Northampton County

Maryellen Jones, Artist, Educator, and Community Volunteer

Rose Battle Lewis, Halifax County Aging Program Coordinator

Rev. Clarence Pender, Youth Pastor, End Street Baptist Church, Scotland Neck

Kesha Rooks, Chief Operating Officer, Rural Health Group, Inc.

Elder Johnny Taylor, Assistant Pastor at Community Church of Christ #2, NC Highway 48, Roanoke Rapids

Heroes are chosen based on their commitment and contributions to the community, unselfish devotion to others, initiative, innovation and leadership, and willingness to share time and wisdom through community service.
