Northampton looks to bounce back

CREEKSVILLE – Northampton County will look to bounce back quickly.
The Jaguars had several chances Friday when they hosted Plymouth at Roy F. Lowry Stadium. Two fumbles and a missed opportunity on fourth down cost Northampton County in a 32-2 loss.
“We are not overlooking anybody, but we know Plymouth is probably the toughest test we’ll have this season,” Head Football Coach George Privott said. “They are always a team that goes deep in the playoffs. Plymouth is traditionally in the third or fourth round, so we know how good they are.”
Privott said his team knew they had to work on the mistakes they made last week. He said Monday was spent working on not turning the ball over in the redzone. Tuesday was spent working on offense.
“We’re been preparing well this week,” the coach said.
As he looks forward to this week, Privott said he knew Rocky Mt. Prep was a young team and that the Jaguars would have an edge in experience.
“They’re very young in the secondary and actually throughout the lineup,” Privott said. “We’re not overlooking them, but we are hoping to get off to a good start and, if things go well, be able to get some of our younger guys on the field.”
Northampton will look to get their offense back on track.
“Last week was pretty tough,” Privott said. “We know the caliber of offensive talent we have, especially with our backs, and having three opportunities in the red zone and coming away with no points was tough.
“We also know we gave up 14 points in the first half when Plymouth is usually up 30 points or so in the first quarter,” he added. “It felt good, but then we gave up a little bit in the fourth quarter. We will spend some time this week talking about not giving up.”
Privott said he was exceptionally pleased with the way the offense looked in the wishbone set.
“I knew when we started talking about consolidation that both Gaston Middle and Conway Middle run out of the wishbone, so our guys would be familiar with it,” he said. “We’d prefer to spread teams out a little and use our speed, but we don’t have a problem lining up and running right at you if we need to.”
The Jaguars are 1-1 heading into the contest, having rolled by Kestrel Heights in the season-opener. Rocky Mount Prep enters the contest 0-2 in their first season of varsity competition.
The teams will meet at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
