James Bridgers

CONWAY – James &uot;Jim&uot; Bridgers, 73, died December 24, 2003, at McGuire Veterans Hospital, Richmond, Va.

A graveside service was conducted Sunday at Creeksville Baptist Church Cemetery, Creeksville, by the Rev. Bob Rogers. Sykes Funeral Service, Rich Square, was in charge.

Bridgers served in the United States Coast Guard and retired as an automobile salesman.

Survivors include his mother, Josie S. Bridgers; and nieces and a nephew.

Dennie Cherry Sr.

POWELLSVILLE – Dennie Lee Cherry Sr., 76, a native of Bertie County, died December 26, 2003, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Powellsville by the Rev. Vernon Lassiter. Burial will be in St. Mark Baptist Church Cemetery, Colerain. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Cherry was a painter and a member of St. Mark Baptist Church.

Survivors include seven sons, Bobby James Cherry of Plainfield, N.J., Adolph Cherry of Middletown, Conn., Charles Cherry of Newark, William Mack Cherry of Englewood, Donnell Cherry of Cofield, Dennie Lee Cherry Jr. of Raleigh and Delope Askew of New York, N.Y.; four daughters, Diane Cherry of Englewood, Emmer C. Cherry and Marie Cherry, both of Powellsville and Dorothy Cherry of Suffolk, Va.; one brother, Joseph Cherry of Colerain; two sisters, Annie Chamblee of Powellsville and Evoria Lee of Colerain; 25 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Ethel H. Odom

ALBEMARLE – Ethel Hendrick Odom, 88, died December 14, 2003, at Stanly Manor in Albemarle.

A graveside service will be conducted Friday at Ahoskie Cemetery by the Rev. Dr. Jesse J. Croom. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.

Charles Hare

CORAPEAKE – Charles Hare, 52, a native of Gates County, died December 24, 2003, at Louise Obici Hospital, Suffolk, Va.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Union Branch Baptist Church by the Rev. Elton Buffalo. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Hare was a member of Union Branch Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Hare; two sons, Terrence Holey of Elizabeth City and Horace Holley Jr. of Corapeake; two daughters, Sandy Holley and Carla Hendricks, both of Corapeake; three brothers, Nathaniel Hayer of Sunbury, Thomas Hayer of New Jersey and George Hare of Durham; four sisters, Catherine Hayer and Miriam Walker, both of Coreapeake, Velma Johnson of New Jersey and Erma Woodson of Long Island, N.Y.; and eight grandchildren.

James D. West

MANNS HARBOR – James Dennis West, 59, a native of Williamston, died December 26, 2003, at Norfolk Medical Facility.

A service of remembrance was conducted Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Nags Head with President Jeff Jacobson. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 4601 Six Forks Rd., Suite 500, Raleigh, NC 27609. Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, was in charge.

West was a retired gunsmith and boat builder at Davis Yachts. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Survivors include his wife, Holly Smith West; his mother, Lillie Mae West of Woodland; two daughters, Cathy Doreen West of Manteo and Carolyn Wainwright of Jacksonville; two stepdaughter, Spring Weight of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Heather Gardiner of Manteo; a sister, Joyce Sawyer of Woodland; and five grandsons.

Frances Alexander

NORFOLK, Va. – Frances G. Alexander, 77, a native of Windsor, died December 21, 2003.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Metropolitan Funeral Service. Interment was in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake.

Survivors include her husband, Mayfield Alexander Sr.; a son, Mayfield Alexander Jr. of Norfolk; and four grandchildren.

Garnette Pugh

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Garnette W. Pugh, 94, a native of Garysburg, died December 25, 2003.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Kempsville Church of Christ by the Rev. Randy Childress. Interment was in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Smith & Williams Funeral Home was in charge. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Kempsville Church of Christ or a charity of choice.

Survivors include a dauaghter, Dorothy L. Peay of Virginia Beach; a sister, Ruby Daughtry of Emporia; a brother, R.A. Woodroof of Roanoke Rapids; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Anna B. White

ELIZABETH CITY – Anna Byrum White, 73, a native of Chowan County, died December 25, 2003, at her residence.

A funeral was conducted Sunday in the Fountain of Life Church by the Rev. M. L. Bloodworth and the Rev. Bill Mayo. Burial was in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family accepted flowers, however anyone wishing may make a memorial gift to the Fountain of Life Ministries Building Fund or to one’s favorite charity. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, was in charge.

Mrs. White was a member of the Fountain of Life Ministries and served as choir director for 22 years, member of the Rebekah Lodge No. 62, past president of the Elizabeth City Business and Professional Women and was a member of the Kindred Trio for 10 years. She was an Avon representative for 34 years.

Survivors include her husband, James Marshall White; four daughters, Sandra R. Spruill of Plymouth, Marsha W. Hill and Gwen R. Hedgepeth, both of Elizabeth City and Michelle W. Clark of Wilmington; three sisters, Earcle W. Riddick of Hobbsville, Evelyn Hobbs and Sylvia Biggs, both of Elizabeth City; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
