Elizabeth S. Babb
SUFFOLK, Va. – Elizabeth Smith Babb, 92, a native of Gates County, died October 26, 2004.
A funeral was conducted Friday in Southside Baptist Church by the Rev. Stewart McCarter. Burial was in Cypress Chapel Christian Church Cemetery. Harrell & Hill Funeral Home was in charge.
Mrs. Babb was a charter member of Southside Baptist Church since 1958 and had retired as a floor supervisor with Planters Nut & Chocolate.
Survivors include her daughters, Sylvia B. Umphlette, Nancy B. Allen and Cheryl B. Johnson, all of Portsmouth; a son, Richard O. Babb Sr. of Chesapeake; sister, Esther S. Norris of Suffolk; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Charles L. Powell
ROANOKE RAPIDS – Charles La’Count Powell, 56, died October 25, 2004 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Roanoke Rapids, by the Rev. Michael E. Simmons. Interment will be in Crestview Memorial Cemetery. H.D. Pope Funeral Home is in charge.
Martha S. Vann
COFIELD – Martha Sue Vann, died October 26, 2004 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at Philippi Baptist Church, Cofield. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A viewing will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
Mrs. Vann was a member of Philippi Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, John C. Vann of Hampton, Va., and James D. Vann II of Suffolk; daughters, Amelia Earley and Barbara Boone, both of Cofield, Maurice Vann, Vivian Davis and Bertha White, all of Ahoskie and Vanessa Anthony of Hampton; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
James E. Blythe
MURFREESBORO – James E. Blythe, 76, a native of Northampton County, died October 27, 2004 at Three Rivers Nursing Home, Windsor.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Nebo Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert L. Holloman. Burial will be in old Nebo cemetery. Jesse Hood Funeral Home is in charge.
Eva B. Mitchell
AULANDER – Eva Bishop Mitchell, 89, a native of Northampton County, died October 27, 2004 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at Sandy Branch Baptist Church by the Rev. Lycurgus Harrell. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.
Mrs. Mitchell was a retired custodian from Hertford County High School and a member of Sandy Branch Baptist Church. She was also a member of Order of Love and Charity and the Pastor’s Aide.
Survivors include sons, Godwin A. Mitchell of Norfolk, Va., Edward Mitchell of Paterson, N.J., Thomas A. Mitchell and Roy Chester Mitchell, both of Washington, D.C., David Mitchell of Los Angeles, CA, Freddie Mitchell of Landover, Lionell Mitchell, Donnell Mitchell and William Mitchell, all of Aulander; one daughter, Brenda Deloatch of Aulander; one sister, Foy Whitaker of Georgia; 32 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and 25 great-great-grandchildren.
Joel P. Deloatche
NORFOLK, Va. – Joel Pittman Deloatche, a native of Conway, died October 25, 2004, in his residence.
Deloatche was a retired baker from Host of Sunbeam with 40 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife, Helen P. Deloatche of Norfolk; daughters, Linda Smith and Ursula Rhodes, both of Norfolk and Gloria Deloatche of Virginia Beach; a son, Joel P. Deloatche Jr. of Norfolk; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Mount Carmel Baptist Church by Elder Wayne Lumpkin. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park. The remains will be ready for viewing Sunday from 3:30 to 6 p.m. The family will assemble at the residence at 10 a.m. for the procession. Carlos A. Enoch Cooper Jr.
MURFREESBORO – Enoch Jobe Cooper Jr., 80, a native of Hertford County, died October 26, 2004 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, Como, by the Rev. James Shearn. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.
Survivors include his wife, Ivelonia B. Cooper of Murfreesboro; children, Warren Elton Cooper and Shirley Cooper Boone, both of Murfreesboro; one sister, Annie Marie Bynum of Ocean Port; N.J.; two brothers, John E. &uot;JC&uot; Cooper and Paul E. Cooper Sr., both of Murfreesboro; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Matokia O. Askew
CORONA, N.Y. – Matokia Omega Askew, died October 26, 2004.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Zion Grove Baptist Church, Aulander, by the Rev. Elbert Lee. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
Survivors include one son, Malvin D. Marsh of Corona; one brother, Malvin W. Askew; and one sister, Voyd Britt of Bronx.
