Amy M. Greene

SNEADS FERRY – Amy Marie Greene, 40, formerly of Ahoskie, died June 5, 2005.

She was a native of Hertford County, a member of Ahoskie Free Will Baptist Church, a waitress, and the daughter of the late James Starkey White and Florence Warren White.

A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, June 10, 2005 at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, N.C. with the Rev. Paul Ange officiating, with burial to follow in Highland Memorial Gardens.

Surviving is a son; Shayne Greene, Gatesville, N.C.; two brothers; Walter M. White and wife Linda, Ahoskie, N.C.; Stewart R. White and wife Terri, Rock Hill, S.C. Besides her parents she was predeceased by a daughter Julie, and a brother, James Rodney White.

Garrett Funeral Home is serving the Greene Family.

John D. Mitchell Sr.

LEWISTON-WOODVILLE – John Davis &uot;JD&uot; Mitchell Sr., 88, a lifetime resident of Lewiston-Woodville, died June 8, 2005, at Beaufort County Hospital in Washington, N.C. Mr. Mitchell was born in Lewiston-Woodville, the son of the late Johnny S. and Elma Marsh Mitchell.

Mr. Mitchell was head engineer for Harrington MFG and spent more than 40 years with the company until his retirement. JD was a member of First Baptist Church of Lewiston. He was also a charter board member of Lawrence Academy in Merry Hill where he was chairman of the school board. He was a former volunteer fireman and loved to fish in his spare time.

JD was married to Marie Brown Mitchell for 64 years, until her death March 11, 2001. He was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Ruth Mitchell, Donald and Terry Mitchell, all of Washington, N.C.; four daughters and sons-in-law, Ann Marie and Jimmy Alston of Edenton, Judy and Allen Futrell of Chocowinity, Toni and Aubrey Burkett of Greenville and Tammy and Carl Cooper of Lewiston-Woodville; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in First Baptist Church of Lewiston by Dr. Greg Barmer. Burial followed in Grace Episcopal Church yard. The family received friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, and at other times from the home of Tammy and Carl Cooper, 509 Jack Branch Road, Lewiston-Woodville. Flowers are appreciated and memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church or Grace Episcopal Church, Lewiston-Woodville.

Jerome Smith

GATESVILLE – Jerome Smith, 56, died June 4, 2005.

A graveside service was conducted Friday in the Norfleet Family Cemetery. Stallings Funeral Chapel was in charge.

Granger O. Branch

ROCKY MOUNT n Granger Oliver Branch, 64, died June 6, 2005 at Duplin General Hospital, Kenansville.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Thorne Chapel Missionary Baptist Church by Elder Myron A. Hopkins. Interment will be in Gardens of Gethesmane, Rocky Mount. H.D. Pope Funeral Home is in charge.

Wendell Lassiter

COLERAIN n Wendell Lassiter, 43, a native of Bertie County, died June 8, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Greater Wynn's Grove Baptist Church by Bishop Thomas Lee. Burial will be in Wilder-Cherry Family Cemetery, Aulander. Wilder's Funeral Home, Inc., is in charge.

Lassiter was a member of Greater Wynn's Grove Baptist Church and was employed by Ashton Lewis Lumber Company, Gates.

Survivors include his mother, Gracie Chamblee Lassiter; a brother, Michael Lassiter of Powellsville; and four sisters, Linda Brinkely and Peggy Lassiter, both of Powellsville, Lisa Lassiter and Shirley Lassiter, both of Ahoskie.

Zachary W. Bryant

HYATTSVILLE, Md. n Zachary Woodrow Bryant, 48, a native of Northampton County, died June 7, 2005 at Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Willow Oak AME Church, Rich Square, by the Rev. James Baker. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder's Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Bryant was a member of Willow Oak AME Church and was employed with Genoc Masonry Company, Washington.

Survivors include his mother, Shirley Porter of Rich Square; his father, Luke Lassiter of Washington; two brothers, Carter L. Porter of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Jerald Lassiter Sr. of Washington; three sisters, Cynthia Wonniemaker, Veronica Hudson, Teresa Brown, all of Washington; godchild, Lotoya Jacobs; and his grandmother, Ella Mae Bryant of Rich Square.

Elbert Saunders

EDENTON n Elbert Saunders, died June 9, 2005 at Britthaven Nursing Home.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Reynolds Funeral Home, Ahoskie, by the Rev. H.H. Murrell. Burial will be in Elm Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include one brother, Clayton Saunders of Ahoskie; and two sisters, Algie Whitehurst of Virginia Beach, Va., and Fannie S. Mitchell of Ahoskie.

Rosena Gatling

MAPLETON n Rosena Gatling, 83, a native of Hertford County, died June 9, 2005 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Parker's Grove Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Jordan Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hunter's Funeral Home, Murfreesboro, is in charge.

She was a member of Parker's Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include three brothers, Johnnie Gatling of Murfreesboro, and James and Emmanuel Gatling, both of New York; and seven sisters, Elizabeth Porter, Margie Stephenson and Flora Cleveland, all of Murfreesboro, Lois Gatling, Annie Parker and Armenthia Gatling, all of Mapleton and Onethia Manley of Ahoskie.
