COFIELD – A family of six was left homeless following a fire that destroyed their residence here Monday.

At 10:31am, the Winton Fire Department responded to a fire on Country Lane off of River Road outside of Cofield.

The three units from Winton arrived on the scene at 10:38 am and were joined by two units from Ahoskie Rural and the North Carolina Forestry Service.

Six people – two adults and four children with ages ranging from 4 to 13 years old were not at home during the time of the blaze.

The cause of the fire was undetermined.

The firefighters successfully contained the fire, but were not able to save the house.

They left the site at 1:17 pm.
