NEA stops Jackets

ROANOKE RAPIDS – Northeast Academy started off the tennis season the right way here Tuesday afternoon.
The Lady Eagles pounced on Roanoke Rapids early, winning five singles matches and cruised to an 8-1 victory over their Roanoke Valley rivals.
Northeast top-seed Lyndal Brown started the rout with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Shannon Saylor while second seeded Laura Boone rallied from an early setback to win in three sets. Boone defeated Laura Ellis 5-7, 6-1 and 6-1.
Fourth seed Chelsea Davis fought off a challenge from Kuristen Ramirez to win 7-6 and 6-0. Allyson Cashwell won the battle of fifth seeds by a final of 6-3 and 6-1.
In the sixth seed matchup, Brittany Wade defeated Carol Melone 6-2, 6-2 to secure the fifth win in singles for Northeast.
Stacy King of Roanoke Rapids got the only win of the day for the Yellow Jackets when she stopped third seeded Samantha Cook 3-6, 6-4 and 6-1.
In doubles’ matchups Brown and Boone secured an 8-5 win over Saylor in Bright in pro sets. Cook and Betty Edwards easily defeated Joshon and Butler 8-1 while Wade and Davis knocked off Williams and Hilliard 8-2.
In the exhibition matches, Edwards defeated A. Fortier 8-0 and Kathryn Bryant won 8-2 over E. Monds. Leigh Ann Barnes suffered an 8-4 setback at the hands of R. Griffin.
The win lifted the Lady Eagles to 1-0 on the season as they prepare for another match with Roanoke Rapids on Monday at 4 p.m.
