AHOSKIE n Kabreyia Araya Marsh, died January 24, 2007 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A graveside funeral was conducted Friday at the Bazemore family cemetery, Windsor. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Survivors include her mother, Natausha Hammonds of Windsor; her father, Khayeff Marsh of Goldsboro; grandmothers, Nanie Crump and Catrina Morris; grandfather, Ronald Powell and David Hammonds Sr.; great-grandmothers, Lenora “LC” Powell and Renee Al-Amin; and great-grandfathers, Jalil Al-Amin, Anderson Sharpe Sr., and James Vinson.

Virginia Bryant

HALIFAX n Virginia Ann Bryant, 61, died January 22, 2007 at Virginia Commonwealth University Hospital, Richmond, Va.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Allen Grove Baptist Church, Halifax, by the Rev. Richard Battle. Interment will be in the church cemetery. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, is in charge.

Verlie J. Gay

CONWAY n Verlie Jacobs Gay, 85, a native of Northampton County, died January 22, 2007 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Branches Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Rich Square, by the Rev. Bobby Warren. Burial will be in the Jacobs family cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include two sons, James Gay of Seaboard and David Gay of Conway; two daughters, May Gay and Reaver Thompson, both of Conway; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Peggy Alexander Winstead

MOREHEAD CITY n Formally of Murfreesboro, NC, Peggy Alexander Winstead, 72, died Wednesday, January 24, 2007. She was born Jan. 5, 1935 in Scotland Neck to the late Ray and Verna Morris Alexander. Mrs. Winstead was preceded in death by her husband, William W. Pete Winstead.

She is survived by one son, William W. Bill Winstead, Jr. and wife, Evelyn of Newport, N.C.; daughter, Susan W. Russell and husband, Scott of Southern Pines, NC; grandchildren, William W. Trey Winstead, III, and James Ryan Winstead of Newport, NC, Melinda, Mark and Melissa Russell, all of Southern Pines; sister, Pat Waters of Rocky Mount, NC.

A celebration of her life will be held at St. James United Methodist Church, Newport, NC, Saturday, January 27, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside services will be held Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at Pineview Cemetery with Rev. Susan Lindblade officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials donations may be made to St. James United Methodist; CLC Fund, 1011 Orange Street, Newport, NC 28570.

Flay S. Dail

HERTFORD n Flay Stallings Dail, 82, Perquimans County, died January 23, 2007 at her home. She was the widow of Milton Dail Jr.

A funeral was conducted Friday at the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, Edenton, by the Rev. William Byrum. Memorial contributions may be made to the Perquimans County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 189, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Mrs. Dail was a homemaker and later served as a teacher’s assistant and regular substitute teacher in the Perquimans County School System. She was a member of Hertford Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Kay Dail Whitley of Hertford and Willie Faye Myers of Kitty Hawk; a sister, Precilla S. Davis of Elizabeth City; a brother, Lewis H. Stallings of Belvidere; and two grandchildren.

Sybil B. Clary

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Sybil Brown Clary, 91, a native of Northampton County, died January 25, 2007 in her residence. She was the widow of Robert Henry Clary.

Mrs. Clary was a member of Community United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Virginia Elizabeth &uot;Betty&uot; Williams of Chesapeake; a sister, Doris Haislip of Emporia, Va.; a brother, Howard Brown of Roanoke Rapids; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Michael Putnam. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at the funeral home the hour prior to the service and other times at 4624 Old Dock Landing Road, Chesapeake.

Ivella Staton

WINDSOR n Ivella Hill Staton, 62, a native of Bertie County, died January 24, 2007 at her residence.

Mrs. Staton was a registered nurse.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Monday at St. Francis Baptist Church, Windsor, Greenville, by Apostle Charles Covil. Burial will be in the Hill family cemetery. A viewing will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Cherry’s Funeral Home Chapel.

Virginia M. Lane

WOODLAND n Virginia Martin Lane, 73, a native of Elkin, W.Va., died January 25, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Woodland Town Cemetery by the Rev. Lamar Wheeler. The family has requested that anyone wishing to share a memorial gift, please do so to the American Syringomylia Alliance Project, P.O. Box 1586, Longview, TX 75606-1586 or to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 2210 Millbrooke Rd., Suite 109, Raleigh, NC 27604. Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc., Conway, is in charge.

Mrs. Lane was a homemaker and had worked as secretary in the office of Special Investigations for the United States Air Force.

Survivors include her husband, James Linwood Lane of the home; five children, James L. Lane Jr. of Chestertown, Md., Joyce L. Burgess of Conway, David M. Lane of Murfreesboro, Vicki L. Knapp of Roanoke Rapids and Steven E. Lane of Conway; four sisters; one brother; and six grandchildren.

Leah J. Lassiter

LASKER n Leah Jay Lassiter, 63, a native of Delaware, died January 25, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Lasker Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Elizabeth Warren in Lasker. Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, is in charge.

She graduated from Nursing School from the University of Pennsylvania. She worked for many years at Roanoke Valley Nursing Home, Rich Square.

She is survived by her father, Robert Thurman Lassiter of Lasker.
