Carolyn N. Liverman

MURFREESBORO – Carolyn Newlin Liverman passed away March 8, 2007 at home in Murfreesboro, NC. Carolyn was born May 22, 1936 in Burlington, NC to Elizabeth N. Newlin and Harvey R. Newlin, who predeceased her. A native of Burlington, NC, Carolyn graduated from Williams High School in Burlington, NC and received her undergraduate degree from Guilford College, where she met her husband Wardell Thomas Liverman, Jr., a native of Murfreesboro, NC. She received a Master of Arts degree from Duke University.

After a brief career as a teacher in Greensboro, NC, Carolyn and her husband, Tom lived in several cities in North Carolina and Virginia, before returning to Murfreesboro, NC where they raised their two daughters. Carolyn worked with Roanoke-Chowan Mental Health Center until her retirement. In Murfreesboro, Carolyn became very active in civic affairs. She served for many years in the Murfreesboro Historical Society, including the office of secretary for 25 years. She was a 30-year member and past president of the Melrose Woman’s Club, and was also an active member and volunteer with the N.C. Watermelon Festival Committee in Murfreesboro. She volunteered as a guide with the Jefcoat Museum and was a long-time member of the Halifax Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She served on the board of directors of the Elizabeth S. Parker Memorial Library.

Carolyn and Tom enjoyed their lives together, whether vacationing at their retreat at Kitty Hawk, NC, cooking for some volunteer event, making candy for neighbors at Christmas, and many other similar tasks. Carolyn was a woman with a quick wit, which was usually to the point. She strived for perfection in all that she undertook.

Many people and organizations benefited from her efforts to do her best.

A long-time active member of Murfreesboro United Methodist Church, Carolyn’s life revolved around her family and community. She is survived by two daughters, Lisa Carol Liverman of Wilmington, NC, Laura Liverman Powell and husband John of Richmond, VA., two grandchildren, Claire Powell and Graham Powell of Richmond, VA., brother, Jim W. Newlin of Raleigh, NC, sisters-in-law Barbara Jean Liverman of Murfreesboro, NC and Edith Liverman Taylor and husband Donald of Fuquay-Varina, NC, and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Murfreesboro Historical Association, Inc. 116 East Main St. Murfreesboro, N. C. 27855 or Murfreesboro United Methodist Church, 313 East High St. Murfreesboro, N. C. 27855 or University Health Systems Hospice Care P. O. Box 272 Ahoskie, N. C. 27910 or a charity of the donor’s choice. The family will receive friends at home (512 Lakeview Drive, Murfreesboro) Tuesday evening March 13th from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, March 14, 2007 at Murfreesboro United Methodist Church, 313 East High Street, Murfreesboro, NC, with burial to follow at Riverside Cemetery. Christine M. Cowand

WINDSOR – Christine Mizelle Cowand, 72, died at her home March 10, 2007.

She was the owner and operator of Midway Beauty Shop for 40 years and a member of Merry Hill Baptist Church.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Merry Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Bryant. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge. Memorial gifts may be made to Merry Hill Baptist Church, Merry Hill-Midway Fire Department or Bertie County Rescue Squad.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas Duncan Cowand; two daughters, Tommye Ann Cowand Collins of Nashville and Gail Marie Cowand of Merry Hill; one brother, William &uot;Billy&uot; Mizelle of Colerain; one sister, Lillian Evans of Chesapeake; and two grandchildren.

Elsie M. Green

HARRELLSVILLE – Elsie Miller Green, 81, a native of Bertie County, died March 8, 2007.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Greater Wynns Grove Baptist Church, Colerain, by Bishop Thomas E. Lee. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Mrs. Green was retired from Perry-Wynn Fishery in Colerain. She was a member of Greater Wynns Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Bessie Mae Miller of Harrellsville; and her sisters, Annie Ruth “Jean” Walston of Gurthie, OK, Daisy Winborne of Middletown, Conn., and Jenny Hardy of Norfolk, Va.

Edwin Knowles

WINDSOR n Edwin Gill Knowles, 84, a native of Bertie County, died March 9, 2007.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Walker Funeral Home by Dr. Carroll Tarkington. Burial with military rites followed at Edgewood Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Windsor United Methodist Church, 408 S. Queen Street, Windsor, NC. Walker Funeral Home was in charge.

Knowles was a retired farmer and a life-long member of Cashie Methodist Church in Woodard. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Griffin Knowles of Windsor; a daughter, Betty Knowles Smithwick of Newport News, Va.; a son, Ronald Edwin Knowles of Rock Hill, SC; a brother, Russell Blount Knowles of Windsor; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Carl M. Riddick

SUFFOLK, Va. – Carl Mack Riddick, 55, a native of Gates County, died March 8, 2007, in his home.

Riddick was formerly employed with Riddick Pump & Well Co. and Amadas Industries, both in Suffolk, he most recently worked with the City of Portsmouth’s Water Dept. He was a member of Reynoldson Baptist Church.

Survivors include his mother, Elnora Eure Riddick of Suffolk; are a sister, Betty Riddick Barden of Suffolk; and two brothers, Ralph Riddick of Suffolk and Paul Riddick of Eure.

A funeral was conducted Sunday in Reynoldson Baptist Church by the Rev. Todd Higginson and the Rev. Billy Presley. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Annie H. Flora

GREENSBORO – Annie Hilder Flora, 84, a native of Bertie County, died March 9, 2007 in Greensboro. She was the widow of Elbert Mason Flora.

Mrs. Flora was a retired seamstress.

Survivors include one sister, Eloise Barnes of Woodland; one brother, Edward L. Parker of Hobgood; six grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

The family received friends at Bowling Funeral Home on Sunday from with a committal service immediately following at Edgecombe Memorial Park.

William Loy, III

ROBERSONVILLE – William Henry &uot;Bill&uot; Loy, III, a native of Alamance County, died

March 10, 2007 at his home.

A memorial service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. James United Methodist Church. The committal will follow in the columbarium at the church. Wilkerson Funeral Home is in charge. Loy was a 1962 graduate of Washington High School and a Vietnam Veteran. He attended North Carolina State University and was a graduate of East Carolina University. For more than 30 years, Bill worked as an engineer for Embarq, formally known as Sprint and Carolina Telephone Company, retiring March of 2006.

Survivors include his mother, Ursula F. Loy of Greenville; his wife, Sharon Dunbar Loy; son, Brad Loy of Greenville; a sister, Jo L. Rountree of Sunbury; and brother, Eric Loy of Greenville.

Grace E. Ricks

ROCKY MOUNT – Grace Evans Ricks, 82, a native of Harrellsville, died March 10, 2007 at Spring Arbor.

She was the widow of T.E. Ricks.

Mrs. Ricks taught in the Rocky Mount School System for over 25 years. She served as a Trustee of Nash Community College for 16 years and received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine from Gov. Jim Holshouser. She was also very active at Lakeside Baptist Church.

Survivors include her children, Walter Ricks, Tina Glover and Ted Ricks; a brother, Clifton Batchelor of Durham; a sister, Joyce Ann Evans Wallace of Richmond, Va.; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lakeside Baptist Church.

Florence Eure

EURE n Florence Jones “Flossie” Eure, 80, a native of Gates County, died March 5, 2007 at her home.

A funeral was conducted Thursday at Eure Christian Church by the Rev. Michael Brinkley. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Eure was formerly employed as a clerk in the Clyde Jones General Store, was an active member of Eure Christian Church and a life member of the Ladies Fellowship.

Survivors include her husband, Z. Delton Eure; a daughter, Teresa E. Winslow of Belvidere; a son, Ron Eure of Crofton, MD; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Bettie C. Fisher

GATES n Bettie Crocker Fisher, 51, a native of Washington, D.C., died March 7, 2007 at Duke University Medical Center, Durham.

A funeral was conducted Saturday at Middle Swamp Baptist Church by the Rev. Thomas Caulkins. Burial was in West Lawn Memorial Park, Elizabeth City. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge. Memorial contributions may be made to any chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Fisher was a homemaker and a member of Middle Swamp Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Scott Fisher; a daughter, Amber Lee Gabbard of Gatesville; a son, Terry Lee Gabbard of Norfolk, Va.; two sisters, Judy Schneider of Kill Devil Hills and Cathy Whitlow of Nathalie; and three grandchildren.

Percell Nowell

HOBBSVILLE n Percell Nowell, died March 10, 2007 at Brian Center, Hertford.

A funeral service will be conducted at 12 noon Thursday at Joppa Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. William Wiggins. The body will lie in state from 11 a.m. until time of service. Mary V. Gillam

WINDSOR n Mary Virginia Gillam, 92, died March 10, 2007.

Miss Gillam taught Latin and history for more than 50 years in high schools and preparatory schools in North Carolina and Virginia. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Windsor United Methodist Church by the Rev. David Woolsey. Burial will be in the family cemetery at Rosefield in Windsor. She is survived by a brother, Moses Braxton Gilliam Jr. of Windsor.

Dixie Boyd

GATESVILLE n Dixie Hope Briggs Boyd, 82, a native of Gates County, died March 5, 2007 at Down East Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was the widow of James Everette Boyd.

A funeral was conducted Thursday in the Sidney F. Harrell Chapel of Harrell and Hill Funeral Home by the Rev. T.A. Powell. Burial was in Holly Lawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Boyd was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Survivors include a daughter, Patsy B. Ward of Gates; a son, Joseph Allen of Penticton, B.C., Canada; three sisters, Frances B. Kincaid, Ruby B. Griggs and Louise B. Wiggins, all of Suffolk; two brothers, Howard E. “Jack” Briggs of Norfolk and William Earl Briggs of Manns Harbor; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mildred Frady

WINDSOR n Mildred Jones Frady, 66, a native of Bertie County, died March 10, 2007 at Martin General Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Walker Chapel by Pastor J.T Edwards. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Frady was a member of New Lighthouse Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Albert Lynn Frady of Lincolnton and Edward Frady of Windsor; one daughter, Alice Virginia Hollis of Williamston; three brothers, John Paul Jones Jr. of Williamston, Quille Levie “Buddy” Jones of Richmond, Va., Henry Franklin Byrum of Greenville; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Kenneth M. Blowe

MURFREESBORO n Kenneth M. Blowe, 43, a native of Hertford County, died March 10, 2007 at Hampton Veterans Hospital, Hampton, Va.

A funeral will be conducted Thursday at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Shirley Johnson. Burial will be in Carver’s Park Cemetery, Murfreesboro. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Murfreesboro, is in charge.

Blowe was employed by BJ’s in Norfolk. He was a US Navy veteran.

Survivors include one son, Quinton M. Blowe of Winton; his parents, James and Elizabeth Blowe of Murfreesboro; three brothers, James Benton of Fredericksburg, Jeffery Blower of Newport News and Barry Blowe of Lawrenceville; and two sisters, Shawn Blowe of Murfreesboro and Latisha Blowe of Cary.

Bessie Bridgett

WINDSOR n Bessie Bridgett, 74, died March 10, 2007 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Thelma B. Britt

MURFREESBORO – Thelma Brett Britt, 97, a native of Hertford County, died March 11, 2007 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital. She was the widow of Johnnie T. Britt Sr.

Mrs. Britt was the oldest member of Murfreesboro United Methodist Church.

She was a graduate of Como High School and had retired as a cafeteria worker at Murfreesboro High School.

Survivors include a daughter, Peggy B. Futrell of Murfreesboro; two sons, Johnnie T. Britt Jr. of Murfreesboro and Robert B. Britt of Lake Gaston; eight grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.

A celebration service of Mrs. Britt’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Murfreesboro United Methodist Church, 313 East High St. Murfreesboro, by the Rev. Arthur Warren. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home 205 N. C. Highway 42 West Ahoskie, from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday and other times at Mrs. Britt’s residence. Walter Peele

AHOSKIE n Walter “Pete” Peele, died March 10, 2007 at Nash General Hospital, Rocky Mount.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Powellsville by the Rev. John Barnes. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Ahoskie. Reynolds Funeral Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include six sons, James Peele of Powellsville, Earl and Larry Peele, both of Ahoskie, Claude Peele of Murfreesboro, Lonnie Peele of Winton and John Peele of Washington, D.C.; one daughter, Patricia Peele Cooper of Ahoskie; one brother, Jimmy Peele of Philadelphia, Pa.; three sisters, Addie Moore of Philadelphia, Ivory Vaughan of Ahoskie and Arlene Drake of Virginia Beach, Va.; 21 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.

Allen T. Ambrose

AULANDER n Mr. Allen Trent Ambrose, age 53, of Aulander, NC, died Sunday, March 11, 2007 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, in Greenville, NC.

Mr. Ambrose was born Nov. 24, 1953 in Bertie County, NC. He was preceded in death by his father, Carl Ambrose, his brother, Billy Ambrose and a daughter, Leslie Ann Ambrose. He was a member of Connaritsa Baptist Church and was employed at Jernigan Oil Co.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Mills Ambrose; his daughter, Gwen Hughson and her husband, Jamie of Colerain, NC; his mother, Sybil Ambrose of Aulander; his sister, Gail Ambrose and his brothers, Carlton “Zip” Ambrose and his wife, Theresa, Kenny Ray Ambrose and his wife, LuAnn, Brad Ambrose and his wife, Carla, all of Aulander, NC; two grandchildren, Emma and Ethan Hughson. Also his nephews, Derek Ambrose, Brandon Ambrose and a niece, Joann Earley.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 14, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Connaritsa Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Thompson and Rev. Roger Leggett officiating. Burial will follow at Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor, NC.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, Tuesday, from 7 until 9 p.m. and other times at the home.

Flowers are welcome, however those wishing to make a memorial contribution, may make one to Connaritsa Baptist Church, Aulander, NC 27805.

Clara Houston

BROOKLYN, NY n Clara Houston, 86, a native of Hertford County, died March 8, 2007 in Brooklyn.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church by the Rev. James B. Sharpe. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include one brother, Raymond Collins of Anderson, SC; and three sisters, Inez Howard, Dora Powell and Ruth Manley, all of Harrellsville.
