Evelyn A. Sessoms

AHOSKIE n Evelyn Askew Sessoms, died June 8, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Friday at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Ahoskie, by the Rev. H.H. Murrill. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Ahoskie. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Mrs. Sessoms was a member of Canaan Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Mathis R. Sessoms of Murfreesboro; two daughters, Johnetta S. Chavis of Ahoskie and Darlene S. Williams of Fort Washington, Maryland; two brothers, Clarence Askew Jr. and Richard Earl Askew, both of Ahoskie; and six grandchildren.

Asie Britt

AHOSKIE n Asie Britt, 77, a native of Hertford County, died June 9, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at New Bethany Baptist Church, Harrellsville, by the Rev. William C. Clark. Burial will be in the Archer family cemetery, Harrellsville. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge.

Britt was a laborer from Georgia-Pacific, Ahoskie.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Moody Britt of Ahoskie; daughters, Cynthia Mizelle of Ahoskie and Margaret Winley, both of Ahoskie; a son, Andre Sessoms of New Jersey; and four sisters, Effie Eley of New York, Mattie Saunders of Williamston, Louise Copeland of Hampton, Va., and Shirley Chavis of Philadelphia, Pa.

Jean M. Wilson

Clemson, SC – Jean Maddrey Wilson, 80, formerly of Seaboard, died June 8, 2007 at Clemson Downs. She was the wife of Dr. Hugh H. Wilson.

She was a graduate of Meredith College for Women in Raleigh. She taught in North Carolina, Ohio, and Clemson where she taught at the Episcopal Day School of Clemson for 23 years.

Survivors include a daughter, Ann Wilson Owens of Greer, SC; son, Carl M. Wilson of Atlanta, GA; sisters, Virginia M. Brooks and Ellen M. Davis, both of Raleigh; and three grandchildren.

Memorial services was conducted Tuesday at Clemson United Methodist Church. A private committal was held prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Clemson United Methodist Church, 300 Frontage Road, Clemson, SC 29631.

Harvey Bowen

WINDSOR n Harvey Clifford Bowen, 82, a native of Washington County, died June 11, 2007 at Bertie Memorial Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Edgewood Baptist Church by the Rev. Chris Lee. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery. Walker Funeral Home is in charge. Memorial gifts may be made to either Edgewood Baptist Church, 348 US 13 N. Windsor, NC 27983 or the Bertie County Rescue Squad, PO Box 74, Windsor, NC 27983.

Bowen was a founding member and deacon of Edgewood Baptist Church, and a retired farmer. An Army veteran, he served in the Philippines during WWII where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Dunlow Bowen of Windsor; three sons, William C. “Bill” Bowen of Greenville, Jim Bowen of Hartsville, SC and David Bowen of Windsor; a sister, Ethel Browning of Plymouth; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Irving T. Spivey

HOBBSVILLE – Irving Trotman Spivey, 84, a native of Chowan County, died June 12, 2007, in Britthaven of Edenton.

Spivey was a retired farmer, he was a member of Warwick Baptist Church and its senior adult men’s Sunday school class.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m.Thursday in Warwick Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Charles Jones. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, is in charge. Friends may join the family at the home of Doris Spivey, 338 Gliden Road, Hobbsville.

ROANOKE RAPIDS n David Hamiel, 73, died June 13, 2007 at Wake Medical Center, Raleigh.

MURFREESBORO n Josie Mae Britt, 85, a native of Woodland, died June 20, 2007 at Rex Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Parker’s Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Mapleton, by the Rev. Fernando E. Temple Sr. Burial will be in Carver’s Park Cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include three daughters, Brenda McEachern of Greensboro, Linda Gail of Wake Forest and Jewel Rascoe of Ashburn, Va.; two sons, Sidney M. Britt of Gaston and Calvin Britt of Sterling; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

COLERAIN n Thelma Wynn Lewis, died June 12, 2007 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

COLERAIN n Terry Eugene “Boo Boo” Sessoms, 39, a native of Bertie County, died June 11, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Mill Branch Baptist Church by the Rev. Carl White. Burial will be in the Sessoms Family Cemetery, Colerain. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Sessoms was a member of Rheema Word of Deliverance Church, Colerain and a farm worker with Mike Harrell.

Survivors include his wife, Nell Lassiter of Colerain; a son, Corey Berry of Lewiston; sisters, Letha Vinson and Sharon Washington, both of Colerain and Sherrie Fennell of Wilson; and two brothers, Clifton Sessoms and Joe Dorsey Sessoms Jr., both of Colerain.

COLERAIN n Brandyn McCoy Cherry, infant, a native of Hertford County, died June 7, 2007 at Duke University Hospital, Durham.

Survivors include his parents, Litia Ross Cherry and Calvin Levon Cherry, both of Colerain; his grandparents, Charlie Lewis Cherry and Beverly Cherry, both of Colerain; great-grandmother, Shirley E. Ross of Springfield, Mass.; a brother, Calvin “C.J.” Cherry of Colerain; his sisters, Aaliyah Cheeks and Cailah Ross, both of Colerain; and his godparents, Alvin Eley and Cathy Eley, both of Hampton, Va.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Victory of Praise Community Church, Harrellsville, located in the former Amanda S. Cherry School Building, by Evangelist Magalene Powell. Burial will be in Wilders-Cherry Family Cemetery, Aulander. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Helen Boothe

SUFFOLk, Va. – Helen Louise Rice Boothe, 79, a native of Walnut Ridge, Ark., died June 12, 2007 at the home of her son in Gatesville. She was the widow of James Edward Boothe.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Liberty Spring Christian Church by the Revs. Allan Lancaster and Russ Wentling. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge. Friends may join the family Saturday in the church social hall either prior to or following the services and all other times at the home of her son, 304 Court Street, Gatesville. Flowers will be accepted and appreciated or contributions in her memory may be made to any chapter of the American Cancer Society or to one’s favorite charity.

Mrs. Boothe was a homemaker and a member of Liberty Springs Christian Church and its Women’s Fellowship.

Survivors include two sons, Edward Myron Boothe of Gatesville and Ricky Allen Boothe of Creedmoor; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
