L. Odell Edwards
CHESAPEAKE, VA –
L. Odell Harris Edwards, 88, a native of Bertie County, and formerly of Como, died August 24, 2007 at Sentara Nursing Center.
Mrs. Edwards was a retired U. S. Postal Clerk, and a member of Buckhorn Baptist Church, where she was active in her church as a leader and teacher for forty three years.
Survivors include three daughters, Carol Vinson of Chesapeake, Faye E. Flora of
Virginia Beach and Helen Barner Price of McKenney; a son, William J. Edwards of Virginia Beach; three brothers, two sisters, 10 grandchildren, and eight great- grandchildren.
A graveside celebration of life service was conducted Monday at Buckhorn Baptist Church Cemetery, Como. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, was in charge.
Ida Jennette
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Ida Ward Hutten Jennette, a native of Bertie County, died August 25, 2007, in a local hospital. She was the widow of Henry James Hutten and Harry M. Jennette.
Mrs. Jennette was a longtime member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, where she had served in several committees having been president of the Women’s Fellowship. She attended Norfolk Business College and then graduated from Norfolk General Hospital as a registered nurse. She retired from C&P Telephone Co. after 29 years as an occupational health nurse.
Survivors include two sons, Henry James Hutten Jr. and Robert Ward Hutten; four sisters, Elsie Shotton and Magnolia Hicks, both of Suffolk, Gwendolyn Phelps of Plymouth and Nora Ward Harris of Wilson; three grandchildren; two stepchildren, William Jennette and Linda Donahue; and five step-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Eastminster Presbyterian Church with the Rev. David Zavadil. Burial will follow in Riverside Memorial Park. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel, is in charge. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
STERLING S. SHUE
TARBORO n Sterling Sidbury Shue, 91, of the Fountains of the Albemarle, Tarboro, formerly of Ahoskie, NC, died Sunday, August 26, 2007.
Born in Wilmington, NC, he was the son of the late William G. and Henrietta Sidbury Shue.
Mr. Shue was an active member of the Ahoskie United Methodist Church since 1950 and was owner and operator of Ahoskie Optical Company until he retired in 1981. He was a member and past master of the Davie Masonic Lodge #39, member and past president of the Ahoskie Lion’s Club, member of the Ahoskie Kiwanis Club and a Boy Scout leader.
Sterling was an avid golfer and member of Beechwood Country Club in Ahoskie, where he earned four hole-in-one trophies.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 67 years, Mary Elizabeth Shue; his three daughters, Kathryn S. Pippen and husband, Ronnie of Belvidere, NC, Charlotte S. Rhoden and husband, Charles of Charleston, SC, and Marilyn S. Carter and husband, David of Cary, NC; a sister, Almon Janicki and husband, Henry of Wilmington, NC; and five grandchildren.
Sterling was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
His friends often say that his first name indicates the quality of the man.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 29, 2007 at Garrett funeral Home, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Dr. John Dutton and the Rev. David Beck officiating.
Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Garrett funeral Home, from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to services on Wednesday.

William E. Hill
COMO – William E. Hill, 88, a native of Southampton County, Va., died August 21, 2007 at his residence.
Hill was a retired truck driver and he also worked part-time for the Hertford County Sheriff’s Department.
He was a member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, Como, where he was a deacon and a former trustee. He was also a Mason.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Erma B. Hill of Como; two daughters, Minister Ernestine Hill of Como and Majorie Vaughan of Raleigh;
and one grandson.
A funeral was conducted Saturday at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, Como.
Burial was in the church cemetery.
Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Murfreesboro, was in charge.
Makenzie H. Clerk
AULANDER n Baby girl Makenzie Hazae Clerk, two month old daughter of Tameka C. Mebane of Aulander and Terrence O. Roscoe of Gatesville, died August 25, 2007 at Norfolk General Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Tuesday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander, by the Rev. Alma O. Lucas. Burial will be in Wilders-Cherrys Family Cemetery, Aulander.
She is survived by a brother, Hajee T. Mebane of Aulander.
Evelyn E. Griffin
DURHAM n Evelyn E. Griffin, 83, a native of Bertie County, died August 24, 2007 at Veteran’s Hospital, Durham.
She was a member of Sandy Branch Baptist Church, Roxobel and an Airman 2nd Class in the US Air Force. She was retired from the military service.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sandy Branch Baptist Church, Roxobel, by the Rev. Lycurgus Harrell. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.
Blair Bennett
MURFREESBORO n Mr. Blair A. “Dick” Bennett, age 91, of Concord, NC, and formerly of Murfreesboro, NC, died Sunday, August 26, 2007 at Five Oaks Center in Concord, NC.
Mr. Bennett was born Nov. 3, 1916 in Cedarville, West Virginia, the son of the late Ray Earl Bennett and Essie G. Bennett. He was a member of Meherrin Baptist Church and retired from Georgia Pacific where he worked as a machinist for 35 years. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Eunice “Tootsie” Dixon Bennett.
Survivors include his son, Blair Dixon Bennett and his wife, Starr of Concord, NC; one granddaughter, Jo Ann Bennett Worthy of Virginia Beach, Va.; also four great-grandchildren, Amber, Brittany, Alex and Chelsea.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 29, 2007 at 3 p.m. at Meherrin Baptist Church with Rev. Billy Sellers officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Meherrin Baptist Church Fellowship Hall on Wednesday from 1:30 until 2:45 p.m. prior to services.
