WINDSOR – Four scored in double figures as the Bertie Lady Falcons beat Greenville J.H. Rose 64-46 here Wednesday in a non-conference varsity girls’ basketball game.
Bertie jumped out to a 9-2 lead early in the game on baskets by Tierra Brown, Devonna Bond, Min Harrell and a Yashanti Bridgers three-point play.
The Lady Falcons led 16-8 at the end of the first period and scored the first basket of the second quarter with an Ayanna Wilson bucket to give them an even greater lead at 18-8.
Rose then went on a 9-4 run to cut Bertie’s lead to five (22-17) with just under four minutes left until the intermission, but then Bertie returned the favor by making seven consecutive points to put them back up by 12 at 29-17.
The Lady Rampants scored the next three points to make the halftime score 29-20 Bertie.
Bertie was outscored 19-11 during the third period, so they started the fourth period with just a four-point lead at 40-36.
The minute’s break between periods must have been enough for the Lady Falcons to regroup, however, as they came out on fire, rolling off three consecutive buckets to increase their lead to ten (46-36).
Bond had one basket while Bridgers scored the other two.
The two teams then traded baskets twice, increasing the score to 50-40.
Carissa Best then made one-of-two foul shots for Rose, getting her team within nine (50-41) but that was as close as they got for the last three minutes of the affair.
Bertie finished on a 14-5 run to end the game at 64-46.
Bridgers scored 17 points to lead the Lady Falcons. Wilson and Satora Swain both earned 12, followed by Mia Harrell with 11.
The only double-digit scorer for Rose was Best with 14 points.
The win brought the Lady Falcons to 1-1 for the season. They open conference play at home against First Flight on Tuesday.
