AHOSKIE – Two on five never works.
It might have point-wise Saturday night, however, as Hertford County High School’s two leading scorers combined to out-score the entire Northampton County High School n East squad.
HCHS senior Lamar Monger and Deshawn Outlaw combined to score 32 points in the Bears’ 70-29 rout of visiting Northampton County High School n East.
After a close game over the opening minutes, Hertford County scored 12 of the final 15 points of the first quarter. Marcus Burnell started the spurt with two free throws and was followed by consecutive hoops from Jamal Jones and Monger.
East interrupted the spurt when Deshawn Vick scored, but the Bears got another bucket from Monger and two more hoops from Jones to take a 19-8 lead. They held a 19-9 advantage after one quarter.
The Bears didn’t stop, however, as they opened the second quarter with nine unanswered points to take a commanding 28-9 advantage.
Darrell Boone again interrupted the spurt with a hoop for Northampton, but the Bears went on to push their lead to 20 (33-13) by the intermission.
The third quarter started with Hertford County going on a 27-4 run that put the game out of reach for good.
Antonio Vaughan and Burnell were the ones that got the spurt going while Monger, Darren Everette, Outlaw and Shea Johnson also contributed.
After it was done, the Bears had taken a 60-17 lead and then cruised to victory from there.
Hertford County was led by 20 points from Monger while Outlaw added 12 points and Vaughan added seven.
