Lady Falcons top Eagles

ELIZABETH CITY – Bertie earned win number one in the Northeastern Coastal Conference during the 2007-08 season Friday.
The Lady Falcon basketball team had four people score in double figures as they outdistanced Northeastern High School 58-45.
Satora Swain led Bertie’s charge with 15 points while Yashanti Bridgers added 14 points, Tierra Brown had 12 and Ayanna Wilson chipped in 10 points.
The Lady Falcons began to take control from the outset, scoring the first seven points enroute to a comfortable 18-6 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Wilson was responsible for six of those points, hitting the first three buckets of the game while Bridgers added a free throw.
After Northeastern got free throws from Darreon Cole and Erin McCarty, Wilson and Brown had back-to-back buckets to give Bertie an 11-2 lead.
The Lady Eagles got within nine (15-6), but Bridgers added a hoop and Swain scored from the free throw line to account for the 12-point edge after one period.
Northeastern outscored Bertie 13-11 in the second quarter, but the Lady Falcons maintained a 29-19 edge at the intermission.
After Mia Harrell hit a free throw to start the third quarter for Bertie, Northeastern scored the next five points to get within 30-24.
The Lady Falcons then got hoops from Harrell, Brown and Wilson in consecutive order to push their lead back to double figures (36-24).
The lead varied from five to 12 points in the third quarter, but the Falcons ended the period with a 46-36 advantage.
Northeastern never got closer than eight in the final period as Bertie pulled away for their first win in the Northeastern Coastal Conference and their fourth of the season.
Bertie (4-2, 1-1) will be back in Elizabeth City Thursday for their annual Christmas tournament at First Flight.
