Mary C. Overton
RALEIGH – Mary Chamblee Overton 90, formerly of Ahoskie, died at City of Oaks Nursing Home, Raleigh, on December 21, 2007.
Mrs. Overton was born in Hertford County in 1917 and was the daughter of the late John Lloyd and Essie Wiggins Chamblee of the Hickory Chapel Community.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Overton was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, William Charlie Overton; sisters, Margaret C. Doughtie and Bessie C. Dilday; brothers, Robert and Elton Chamblee.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Rieth and husband Karl of Queenstown, MD.; a son, Charles W. Overton and wife Patsy of Raleigh; four grandchildren, Karl Rieth, Jr. of Queenstown, MD., Lori Schneider and husband Scott of Lake Worth, FL., Margaret O. Spears and husband Raymond of Benson, NC., and Kathryn O. Wright and husband Bob of Garner, NC.; six great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Delaney, and Alexandra Schneider, Amanda Spears, and Bradley and Blair Wright.
Mary was a long time employee of Ahoskie Department Store, a Volunteer of the Roanoke Chowan Hospital Auxiliary and a member of First Baptist Church where she was active in various women’s groups.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday December 27, 2007 at Garrett Funeral Home-Ashley Chapel, 205 NC Highway 42 West, Ahoskie, with Rev. Daniel Glaze officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens, US Highway 13 South, Ahoskie.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-3 p.m. prior to services, and wishes to thank the staff of the City of Oaks for their care and kindness shown to Mary during her extended stay.
Mildred Martin Woodard
POTECASI – Mrs. Mildred Martin Woodard, age 88, died at the Rich Square Health Care Center in Rich Square on Monday, December 24, 2007.
She was a native of Northampton County, living in Potecasi most of her adult life.
She was a member of the Potecasi Baptist Church and was married to the late Roger Woodard, Sr.
Survivors include two daughters, Doris Earley of Roxobel and Mildred “Lib” Cale of Ahoskie; two sons, Thomas E. Woodard of Franklin, VA and Ben Woodard of Jackson; and one sister, Ruby Martin Baker of Ahoskie.
Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, December 27, 2007 at the Potecasi Baptist Church Cemetery in Potecasi with the Rev. Bob Deacon officiating.
Sykes Funeral Service of Rich Square is handling the arrangements.
Bertha Long Joyner
COMO – Bertha Long Joyner died Tuesday, December 25, 2007 at her residence.
Survivors include four daughters, Ola Mae Boone of Conway, Connie L. Christian of Hopewell, Va., Theola Martin of Virginia Beach, Va. and Rebecca C. Moore of Como; 25 grandchildren, 55 great grandchildren and 38 great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 28 at Nebo Baptist Church, Murfreesboro with the Rev. Luther Morris Jr. presiding.
Interment will follow in the Nebo Church Cemetery (old Creeksville Church).
Reynolds Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Mildred Jordan
GOLDSBORO – Mildred Harriett Collier Jordan, 83, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2007 at the home of her daughter in Goldsboro.
She was born March 1, 1924 in Wilson County and was a member of Stoney Creek Free Will Baptist Church.
Jordan is survived by her daughters, Judy Upson of Michigan, Lois Mooring of Goldsboro, Joyce Connor of Winton, Dianne Jordan of Goldsboro, Linda Jordan of Goldsboro and Susie Saunders of Colerain; sons, Wayne Jordan of Zebulon, Kenneth Harrell Jordan of Harrellsville and Andy Jordan of Whitakers; sisters, Nellie Branch of Wilson and Elsie Hales of Kinston; 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Dec. 27 at the Seymour Funeral Home Chapel in Goldsboro with the Rev. Gary Bailey and the Rev. Barry Williamson officiating. Interment followed in the White Oak Church Cemetery.
