Lady Eagles top ACS

AHOSKIE – Bethel Christian Academy broke open a close game in the second quarter.
The Lady Eagles varsity basketball team scored the first 10 points of the second period and went on to defeat Ahoskie Christian School 40-27 here Thursday night.
Elizabeth Farmer scored three times and Mindy Miller twice during the spurt which saw Bethel expand their five-point lead to a comfortable 19-4 advantage.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, Farmer went down to a re-injured knee and didn’t return for the rest of the game.
Ahoskie responded by scoring the next four points unanswered with free throws from Amanda Hall and Jessica Harrell and a hoop from Sarah Calderado.
Miller, however, answered with a three-pointer and a field goal back-to-back as Bethel claimed a 24-8 advantage at the intermission.
The Lady Eagles continued to roll in the third quarter, scoring the first eight points and holding the Lady Warriors scoreless for the first five and a half minutes of the quarter.
Megan Simons had six of those eight points and Miller added the other hoop to give Bethel a 32-8 advantage.
Calderado stopped the spurt with her hoop, but Miller scored six points and Erin Young added a basket to give Bethel a 40-10 lead.
The Lady Eagles emptied their bench from that point and did not score during the fourth quarter.
Ahoskie, meanwhile, got a bucket from Bridgett Babb to start the fourth quarter and used that to spark a 17-0 run during the period.
Dyani Hall added three points and Harrell a free throw as Ahoskie closed to within 40-16 with 4;30 to play. Calderado, who led Ahoskie with 10 points, sandwiched hoops around a pair of buckets from Amanda Hall to close the gap to 40-25.
Free throws accounted for the rest of the scoring in the contest.
Miller led all scorers with 21 points in the contest while Simons added nine and Farmer had six for the Lady Eagles. Amanda Hall Hall was second on Ahoskie’s scoring roster with six while Dyani Hall added five points.
