AHOSKIE – One extra session still wasn’t enough.
Ridgecroft School’s varsity girls upset North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association 1-A number three ranked Hobgood Academy 46-44 in double overtime Tuesday night.
Ridgecroft trailed 10-7 after the first quarter and 18-13 by the intermission, but began to work their way back into the game in the third quarter and rallied for the tie in the fourth period.
The game was deadlocked at 37 after regulation and then Ridgecroft senior Hayes Bryant made two free throws with six seconds to play to force the second overtime.
Once in double OT, Emily Cooke scored for the Lady Rams and Ridgecroft was able to keep possession of the basketball for most of the period.
Cooke was finally sent to the free throw line with 15 seconds to play and made both shots. Hobgood scored with two seconds left, but Ridgecroft got the ball inbounds and ran out the clock.
“The girls never quit,” Lady Rams’ coach Elton Winslow said. “They kept getting after them.”
The Lady Rams were led by 19 points from Bryant and 12 from Cooke. Tayler Smith added five points while Jessica Bolton had four. April Piland and Caitlin Harrison contributed three points each.
Schuyler Edmondson led Hobgood with 12 points while both Morgan Clark and Jamie Vanderford had 10 points each.
Ridgecroft improved to 8-6 overall and 3-2 inside the Tarheel Independent Conference.
In the junior varsity girl’s game, Ridgecroft defeated Hobgood 31-15.
