Susie Todd Hughes

Susie Todd Hughes, 77, of Wilmington, NC, died January 11, 2008.

Susie was born January 4, 1931 in Bertie, NC, the daughter of the late Johnny and Julie Todd. She was also preceded in death by her husband Fred Hughes, a daughter, a brother, J.B. Todd and a sister, Edna Earl Bazemore.

Susie was a devoted member of Calvary Baptist Church and was a longtime employee at Tomlinsons.

Susie is survived by a son, Don Winston Hughes and a daughter, Tempie Hughes Wood and her husband Andy. She is also survived by a sister, Carolyn Todd Lassiter and her husband Johnnie; three brothers; Roy Todd, Billy Ray Todd and Robert Todd; two grandchildren; Marshall Wood and Mark Wood; and three great grandchildren; Hunter Wood, Madison Wood and Logan Wood and several nieces and nephews.

The family will received from 7-9PM Monday at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral and Cremation Service, Oleander Chapel where funeral services will be held at 11AM Tuesday with Rev. Donnie Lovette and Rev. Andy Wood officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial donations be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 423 N. 23rd St., Wilmington, NC 28405.

Sybil C. Ambrose

AULANDER n Mrs. Sybil Conner Ambrose, age 75, of Aulander, NC, died Sunday, January 13, 2008 at her home.

Mrs. Ambrose was born July 23, 1932 in Bertie County, the daughter of the late William McKinley Conner and Martha Mildred Phelps Conner. She was also predeceased by her husband, Carl Ambrose, her sons, Billy Ambrose and Trent Ambrose, a granddaughter, Leslie Ambrose and a brother, James Conner.

Survivors include her children, Gail Ambrose of Aulander, Carlton “Zip” Ambrose and his wife Theresa of Ahoskie, Kenny Ray Ambrose and his wife LuAnn of Aulander, and Brad Ambrose and his wife Carla of Ahoskie. Her grandchildren, JoAnn Earley, Derek Ambrose, Brandon Ambrose and Gwen Hughson. Her great-grandchildren, Matthew Earley, Braiden Ambrose, Emma Hughson, and Ethan Hughson. Her brother, William McKinley Conner Jr. of Askewville. Her sisters, Gladys Holliday, Vashti Smithwick, both of Windsor, NC and Faye Jernigan of Askewville, NC.

Funeral services will be held, Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Connaritsa Baptist Church with Dr. Allison Haynes officiating. Burial will follow at Edgewood Cemetery in Windsor, NC.

The family received friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, Monday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM.

Elsie Williams

NEW YORK CITY n Elsie Odell Williams, 65, died January 19, 2008 at St. Lukes Hospital, NYC.

A funeral service will be conducted Saturday at Mt. Arie Apostolic Faith Holiness Church, Windsor. A visitation will be held from 7-8 p.m. Friday at Gilliam Funeral Home. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Windsor. Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Warren H. Rhodes

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Warren H. &uot;Dusty&uot; Rhodes, 87, a native of Hartland, W.Va., died January 12, 2008. He was the widower of Shirley W. Rhodes.

Rhodes was a boatsman’s mate in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II. He was a Norfolk and Southern Bridge Tender at the Chesapeake/Albemarle Canal Bridge. Dusty was a police officer in Norfolk County and later a sergeant in the Chesapeake Police Department for 29 years. He was a member of the Great Bridge Masonic Lodge No. 257 and the VFW. He was a member of Hickory United Methodist Church. Survivors include three children, William W. Rhodes Sr. of Chesapeake, Richard W. Rhodes of Windsor and Betty Ann McKinzey of Elizabeth City; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake by the Rev. Tom Mercer. Interment will be in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. Friends are invited to sign the online guest book at www.omanfh.com.

Sam H. Jones

CONWAY – Sam Henry Jones, 79, died January 12, 2008.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Conway Baptist Church. Bridgers Funeral Home Inc., is in charge.

Emmett P. Jones Sr.

TYNER – Emmett Parker Jones Sr., 93, a native of Gates County, died January 13, 2008, in his home. He was the widower of Erma Margueritte Ward Jones.

Retiring in 1970 after 16 years as an aviation metal smith with the U.S. Coast Guard Aircraft and Supply Center in Elizabeth City, he later taught a welding class at Chowan High School. A wheelwright and blacksmith, trades taught to him by his father, he not only worked at these but shared them with others through craft shows and county fairs throughout the area. He was an active member of Center Hill United Methodist Church, he was a lay leader, a trustee, and lay speaker; was a member of the Mended Hearts Association and had served in the North Carolina National Guard.

Survivors include his son, Emmett P. Jones Jr. of Falls Church, Va.; and a brother, O.B. Jones of Suffolk.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, by the Rev. Don English. Burial will be in Beaver Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to any chapter of either the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

Martha L. Spickard

NORFOLK, Va. – Martha L. Spickard, 75, of died January 9, 2008.

Mrs. Spickard was a lifetime member of Burrows Baptist Church where she served in Sunday school, on the Counting Committee and sang in the choir for many years.

Survivors include her husband, Alan Spickard; her daughters, Susan Ross of Conway, and Tyna Smelser of Virginia Beach; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, by the Rev. Donald Harris and the Rev. David Ross. Interment will be private. The family will greet friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. John M. James

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – John Milton James, 58, a native of Bertie County, died January 8, 2008, in Chesapeake Regional Medical Center.

James was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Berkley. He was employed with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard for 21 years.

Survivors include his wife, Betty James of Chesapeake; two daughters, Angela Johnson of Ahoskie and Michelle James of Philadelphia; two sons, Michael James of Chesapeake and Reginald James of Virginia Beach; stepmother, Helen James; two sisters, Diane Sharp of Gurnee, Ill., and Sherry Lewis of Tampa, Fla.; two brothers, Kenneth James of Cape Coral, Fla., and Ervin James of Chesapeake; and four grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Monday in Antioch Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. James W. Webb. Interment was in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Metropolitan Funeral Service, Granby St. Chapel, was in charge.

Nellie Y. Martin

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Nellie Younger Martin, 83, a native of Reidsville, died January 10, 2008. She was the widow of George W. Martin and Robert N. Tuggle.

Mrs. Martin retired from General Electric, was a member of Bowers Hill Baptist Church, and the Order of the Eastern Star, Esther Chapter 37, where she was a Past Matron and also held every other position.

Survivors include seven children, Ruth Woosley of Portsmouth, John Henry Martin of Chesapeake, Nancy Mitchell of Suffolk, George P. Martin of Chesapeake, James &uot;Bo&uot; Martin of Portsmouth, Eva Meeks of Sunbury and David &uot;Bunky&uot; Martin of Portsmouth; three sisters, Jewel Smith, Joy Wooten and Ruby Strader; one brother, Grover Younger; 20 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren with two more on the way.

A celebration of her life, including Eastern Star rites, were held Monday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Ron Workman. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens on Airline Blvd. Contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters.

Sharon C. Smith

BALTIMORE- Md. – Sharon Cherry Smith, died January 9, 2008 at the University of Maryland Hospital, Baltimore, Md.

Survivors include her father, Rufus R. Cherry; stepmother, Westelle K. Cherry;  brother, Ronald Cherry; step-brother, Steven Howington; and a step-sister, Teresa

Howington-Vaughan.

Services will be held on Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m. in

Maryland.  Final services will be held on Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at Berean Bible Baptist Church by R.H. Michael Benton.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

George E. Wynne

AHOSKIE – George Edward Wynne 81, of the 300 block of West South Street died January 14, 2008 at Guardian Care of Ahoskie.

Mr. Wynne was a native of Martin County, a retired Parole Officer for the N.C Department of Corrections, a former manager of Standard Chevrolet and Oldsmobile Company, former President of the Ahoskie Chamber of Commerce, former Master of the Davie Masonic Lodge # 39 A.F & A.M., a member of the Sudan Shrine Temple, New Bern. He was a Member of Hickory Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, A Navy Veteran of WWII, and the son of the late Berry Bubble Wynne and Elizabeth Mc Daniel Peele.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Myrtle Robertson Wynne, two daughters; Jennifer Beverly and husband Bill, Richmond, VA., Georgia Copeland and husband Bill, Ahoskie, NC., one son; John E. Wynne, Ahoskie, NC., one stepson; Donald Overton and wife Linda, Collington Harbor, NC., two brothers; McDaniel Wynne, and W. R. Wynne, both of Stokes, NC., two half brothers; Robert Peele and Gene Peele, both of New Bern, NC., three grandchildren; Scott Joyner, Richmond, VA., Eric Joyner, Knoxville, TN. And Will Chamblee, Ahoskie, NC., two step grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

A celebration of Mr. Wynne’s life will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, January 17, 2008 at Garrett Funeral Home Ashley Chapel 205 NC. Highway 42 West Ahoskie, NC, with Rev. Robert M. May and Rev. Michael Williams officiating. Burial will follow at 2:00 PM in Pinewood Cemetery Greenville, NC.

Jessie M. Butler

POWELLSVILLE n Mrs. Jessie Mae Manning Butler, died January 12, 2008 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Matthew Silver. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Ahoskie. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Mrs. Butler was a member of Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church, Ahoskie.

Survivors include two sons, Harold M. Butler of Smithfield, Va., and Jerome Butler of Ahoskie; and 17 grandchildren.

Paul White Sr.

COMO n Paul Albert White Sr., 66, a native of Hertford County, died January 10, 2008 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Nebo Baptist Church, Murfreesboro, by the Rev. James Jordan. Burial will be in Carver Park Cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Maggie D. White of Como; three sons, Ricky White of Charleston, SC, Paul White Jr. of Tocoma, Washington and Jasper White of San Diego, CA; four daughters, Brenda White and Renee A. Riddick, both of Murfreesboro and Lisa Copeland of Chesapeake, Va.; one brother, Richard Whitehead of Portsmouth; two sisters, Betty Richardson of Landover, Md., and Sandra McKnight of Portsmouth; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Benjamin Pillmon, Jr., 73, died January 11, 2008 at Howard University Hospital, Washington, D.C.
