Thomas E. Gilliam
LEWISTON – Thomas Edward Gilliam, 63, a native of Bertie County, died January 16, 2008 at his residence.
Gilliam was employed with Gwaltney Smithfield Packing Company, Smithfield, VA.
Survivors include his wife, Madleen Smallwood Gilliam
of
Lewiston; a son, Sgt. Wesley Gilliam of South Korea; daughters, Patricia Gilliam of Lewiston and Pamela Cherry of Huntersville; a sister, Louise Askew of Lewiston, Nancy Gray Bowman of East Orange, NJ, and Lorraine Askew of Alexandria; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral was conducted Monday at Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, Lewiston, by the Rev. Alma O. Lucas. Burial was in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Aulander, was in charge.
Marion Harris
COLERAIN – Name of Deceased: Marion Elizabeth White “Tink” Harris, 52, a native of Bertie County, died January 16, 2008 at her residence.
Mrs. Harris was a member of Oxley Hill Baptist Church and employed with Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation Center, Windsor.
Survivors include her mother, Dorothy E. White of Colerain; sons, Arnold Riddick of Elizabeth City, Jason Riddick, Kendall Riddick and Aaron Riddick, all of Colerain; daughters, Diyander Riddick of Colerain, Monica McNeal of Washington, and Ambria McNeal of Colerain; brothers, Larry White and Jerry White, both of Windsor; sisters, Cordelia Cofield, Carolyn White, Janet White, Dorothy White and Hope White, all of Colerain, and Veronica White of Roper; and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Oxley Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Merry Hill, by the Rev. Vonner Horton. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.
Jeanette Howell
SEABOARD n Jeanette Parker Howell, 79, a native of Suffolk, Va., died January 18, 2008 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids. She was the widow of Randolph Howell.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Seaboard Cemetery by the Rev. Rick Gaskins. Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, 4530 Park Road, Suite 230, Charlotte, NC 28209. Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, is in charge.
Mrs. Howell was a former social worker, a homemaker and a member of Seaboard Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Jay Howell of Roanoke Rapids and Mike Howell of Raleigh; and two grandchildren.
Wilbur B. Carter Sr.
SUNBURY -Wilbur Brooks Carter Sr., 95, a native of Gates County, died January 19, 2008. He was the widower of Flora Rountree Carter.
Carter was a retired farmer and a member of the first graduating class from Sunbury High School, he was a member of Damascus Christian Church, and the Peanut Grower’s Association.
Survivors include two daughters, Carole C. Smith of Gates and Alice C. Moore of Sunbury; two sons, John Carter of Sunbury and Dr. William B. &uot;Bill&uot; Carter Jr. of Carrboro; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, by the Rev. Tracy Clayton and the Rev. Billy Presley. A private entombment will follow in Damascus Christian Church Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gates County Historical Society for the benefit of the Sunbury School Project or the Gates County Rescue Squad.
Alverta L. Cornette
HARRELLSVILLE n Alverta Lowe Cornette, 85, a native of Gates County, died January 18, 2008.
Mrs. Cornette was a member of Christian Harbor Baptist Church where she was formerly a longtime choir member and Sunday school teacher.
Survivors include a grandson; granddaughter; and great-granddaughter.
A graveside celebration of life service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Hillcrest Cemetery in Colerain, by the Rev. Hugh Mizelle. The family will assemble at the cemetery at 1:45 p.m. prior to services. Garrett Funeral Home-Ashley Chapel is in charge.
Tommie F. Parker Jr.
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Tommie Fred Parker Jr., 83, a native of Aulander, died January 19, 2008.
Parker was a member of the Navy he fought in World War II aboard the USS Leedstown and the Korean War aboard the USS Capricornus AKA-57 before moving to Norfolk where he worked at the Naval Air station as a production controller until he retired.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara; his children, Sandra Hogge of Portsmouth, Anita Gambardella of Norfolk, Alecia Parker of New York City and Stephanie Parker of Atlanta; a sister, Hazel White; six grandchildren; and seven great- grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m.
at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home, Wednesday. The family will be accepting visitors Tuesday at Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home from 7 until 8 p.m. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park with full military honors. Robert L. Brooks Sr.
EDENTON – Robert Lee &uot;Bob&uot; Brooks Sr., 75, died Jan. 17, 2008, in his home.
Brooks was a North Carolina licensed electrical contractor. He was a volunteer fireman for the Edenton Fire Department from 1955-1987 and was a member of Edenton Baptist Church, where he had served on several committees.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice Williams Brooks; one daughter, Susan Brooks Furlough of Edenton; two sons, Robert &uot;Robbie&uot; Lee Brooks of Raleigh and John Allen Brooks of Hendersonville; two sisters, Dorothy Brooks Baker of Merry Hill and Eleanor Brooks Gahagan of Dayton, Pa.; three brothers, James Henry Brooks of Colerain, Thomas Allen Brooks of Windsor and Dennis Roland Brooks of Merry Hill; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
A celebration of Mr. Brooks’ life was held Sunday in Edenton Baptist Church by the Rev. David Brooks. Burial followed in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Evans Funerals and Cremations of Edenton, was in charge.
