Ethel H. Britt
COMO n Ethel Horton Britt, 83, died January 20, 2008 in Scotland Neck.

Robert J. Hendrix Jr.
HOBBSVILLE – Robert John Hendrix Jr., 84, a native of Gates County, died January 20, 2008, in Sentara Obici Hospital, Suffolk.
Hendrix was a retired farmer and a member of Sandy Cross Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Hobbs Hendrix; a daughter, Cindy H. Knight of Suffolk; two sisters, Frances Bazemore of Corapeake and Juanita Trotman of Hobbsville; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A funeral was conducted Wednesday
in Sandy Cross Baptist Church by the Revs. Vern Gilmer and Gene Asbill. Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, was in charge.
Ernest C. Stallings
BELVIDERE – Ernest Calvin Stallings, 71, a native of Perquimans County, died January 21, 2008 in Winslow Nursing Home, Elizabeth City.
Stallings was a retired farmer and a member of Sandy Cross Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary S. Hobbs of Sunbury, Susan S. Baker of Belvidere and Shirley S. Greene of Eure; one sister, Doris S. Perry of Suffolk; and
five grandchildren.
A funeral was conducted Wednesday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, by the Rev. Vern Gilmer. Burial followed in the Stallings family cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Perquimans County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 141, Hertford or to one’s favorite charity.
Monte T. Watford
COMO n Monte Thomas Watford, 51, a native of Suffolk, Va., died January 17, 2008 at Hampton Medical Center, Hampton.
Watford served in the US Army for two years and the US Navy for four years. He was a 1974 graduate of Murfreesboro High School.
Survivors include his mother, Frances Majette of Como; two sisters, Jacqueline Boone of Rocky Mount and Carol Majette-Freeman of Pendleton; and brothers, Victor Majette of Murfreesboro and Curtis Majette of Mapleton.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church Murfreesboro by the Rev. Robert D. Richardson. Burial will be in the Gatling Cemetery, Mapleton. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.
Haywood Watson
MONROE n Haywood Watson, 55, a native of Bertie County, died January 18, 2008 at his residence.
Watson was a 1970 graduate of Bertie High School and a member of Mt. Ararat Baptist Church, Windsor.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline Jefferson Watson of Monroe; daughters, Angela “Michelle” and Kryshana “Jelly Bean”, both of Monroe and Zjhahaania of Lewiston; a sister, Willa Watson of Raleigh; a brother, Roosevelt Watson of Windsor; and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church, Windsor, by the Rev. James Collins. Burial will be in Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery, Lewiston. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander.
Canary Spruill
RICH SQUARE – Canary Farizer Majette “Farizer” Spruill, 70, a native of Northampton, died January 21, 2008 in Greenville.
Mrs. Spruill was a member of Sandy Branch Baptist Church, Roxobel and self-employed as a beautician.
Survivors include her husband, Edwin Lato Spruill of Rich Square; sons, Miguel Spruill of Columbia, SC, Marcus Spruill of Philadelphia, Pa., and Kevin Spruill of Maryland; and one daughter, Bridget Spruill Fennell of Raleigh.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sandy Branch Baptist Church, Roxobel, by the Rev. Lycurgus Harrell. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Aulander, is in charge.
Mrs. Wilhelmina Patterson Lasley Former R.L. Vann Teacher Passes
Wilhemina Patterson Lasley, who grew up in Ahoskie and taught at R.L. Vann during the 1960’s passed away on Saturday, January 19, 2008 of a heart attack at the age of 77. Mrs. Lasley died at her home in Washington, DC.
She was the daughter of Reverend R.H. Patterson, a former pastor of 27 years, at New Ahoskie Baptist Church and Lela B. Patterson also a teacher at R.L. Vann. After graduating from R.L. Vann Wilhelmina attended Virginia State College in Petersburg, Virginia where she met Army Officer Oliver P. Lasley. They were married in 1952. Over the next ten years, she accompanied her husband on tours of duty in Nuremburg, Germany, Fort Rucker, Alabama, and Worms, Germany. They later moved to the DC metro area where Mrs. Lasley received her master’s degree in education from the University of MD. She retired from a career as a reading specialist in the Prince Georges County MD public schools in 1993.
Her husband passed away in June 1979. Mrs. Lasley is survived by a daughter, Corlis Sellers; a son, Oliver “Jeff” Lasley, Jr., (Merle); a brother, George Patterson (Constance); three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild and two nephews.
Her funeral will be Saturday, January 26, 2008 at Woodstream Church 10:00 a.m., 9800 Lottsford Rd., Mitchellville, MD 20721.
A viewing on Sunday, January 27, 2008 from 1-2 p.m. at New Ahoskie Baptist Church in Ahoskie, NC and her interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Ahoskie, NC.

AHOSKIE n Evelyn Wiggins Futrell, died January 19, 2008 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Soul Saving Station, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Eddie Lee. Burial will be in the Claudia Ambrose Cemetery, Colerain. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
Survivors include a son, Leslie Earl Lee of Newport News, Va.; five daughters, Inesia Harmon, Margaret Lee, Nettie Lee, Lora Lee and Marjorie Bazemore, all of Aulander; three sisters, Virginia Jones of Roxobel, Margaret Combo of Petersburg and Mary Johnson of Kelford; six brothers, Rufus Lee and Alexander Lee, both of Aulander, William Taylor of Powellsville, Thomas Lee of Manson, Jeff Hardy of Roxobel, and Al Smith of Greenville; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
