Lawrence defeats Bethel

ASKEWVILLE – Lawrence Academy continued their efforts to finish above .500 for the first time in five years.
The Lady Warriors’ varsity girls basketball team defeated county rival Bethel Christian Academy 45-34 on the road Thursday night.
Lawrence and Bethel each got off to a slow start during the contest with the score tied at 4-all after one period of play.
The Lady Warriors stepped up their game in the second quarter, outscoring their hosts 13-6 to take a 17-10 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Lawrence added to their lead by scoring 13 in the third quarter while holding the Lady Eagles to 11. They won the fourth period 15-13.
“We did a good job on our turnovers tonight,” Lawrence Head Coach Jack Williford said of his team only committing seven turnovers for the evening.
“We have got to start shooting the ball better from the field,” he added. “We also need to get healthy before the Tarheel Independent Conference tournament.”
Lawrence senior Kendall Street led the Lady Warriors with 23 points for the evening. Rachel Taylor, Kathryn Taylor and Sarah Gillam added five points each while Leanne Eubanks checked in with four points.
Rounding out the scoring for Lawrence were Kathryn Gilbert with two and Debbie Stotesbury with one point.
Bethel senior Mindy Miller led the Lady Eagles with 12 points for the evening while classmate Kelli Hoggard added 11 points.
Erin Young added eight points for Bethel.
Lawrence (11-10) was back in action last night (Friday) when they traveled to Pungo Christian Academy. Bethel will be on the road tonight when they travel to Riverside.
