John Smallwood

HAMPTON, Va. n John Thomas “Tom” Smallwood, 68, a native of Lewiston, died May 17, 2008 James River Convalescent Home.

 Survivors include his daughters, Barbara Rogers of New Bern and Deloris Stancil of Hampton; sons, Donald L. Harris and William Harris, both of Jersey City, NJ, John T. Harris of Columbus, Ohio and Robert Harris of Lewiston; a brother, Dave Smallwood of Lewiston; a sister, Mageline Gilliam of Lewiston; 19 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Rich Square.

Burial will be in Wilder’snCherry Family Cemetery, Aulander.

Eleanor Dendy

ENFIELD n Eleanor Dendy, 82, died May 19, 2008 at Nash General Hospital, Rocky Mount.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. H.D. Pope Funeral Home is in charge.

Robert E. Taylor

CONWAY n Robert “Bobby” Edward Taylor, Jr., 59, die Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at his home in Conway with his family at his side. He had been preceded in death by his father, Robert E. Taylor, Sr.

A loving husband and father and a doting grandfather and uncle, he enjoyed sharing laughter with others because of his wonderful sense of humor. He was retired as Lead Operator with Georgia Pacific Spray Dry Plant and Operator Technician with Georgia Pacific Resins in Conway and was a member of Conway Baptist Church where he served as President of the Brotherhood, was an active Deacon, and a Trustee. Also, he was a charter member of the Conway-Severn Rescue Squad and a member of the Conway Volunteer Fire Department. For recreation, he enjoyed fishing and golf.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Wanda Ricks Taylor of their home; two children, Robert Lawrence Taylor and his wife, Jennifer, of Clayton and Emily Taylor Jenkins and her husband, Jason, of Conway; three grandchildren, Preston Edward Taylor and Peyton Elizabeth Taylor of Clayton and Taylor Lynn Jenkins of Conway; his mother, Christine Taylor of Conway; one sister, Donna Taylor Simpson of Glasgow, VA; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Conway Baptist Church with Rev. Willie McLawhorn and Rev. Royce Williams presiding.

The family will be receiving friends at Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc. in Conway from 7 to 8:30 p.m.Thursday and at other times at the family home. They have requested that in lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to share a memorial gift, please do so to the Conway Baptist Church Mission Fund.

Kenneth Brockhum

CONWAY n Kenneth Matthew Brockhum, 16, a native of Ahoskie, died May 19, 2008.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday at Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery by the Rev. Doug Spivey. Memorial gifts in Kenneth’s memory may be made to Kenneth Brockhum Memorial Fund, PO Box 456, Windsor, NC 27983. Any food gift may be sent to the Kelford Baptist Church.

Kenneth was a 10th grade student at Northampton East High School. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Survivors include his father, Kenneth Brockhum of Windsor; his mother, Christine Deloach of Onteona, NY; brothers, Daniel Michael Brockhum, Dennis Alan Brockhum and Christopher Deloatch, all of Onteona; half sister, Jennipher Leavitt of Greenville; maternal grandfather, Everett Harold Leavitt of Conway; and paternal grandmother, Betty Lou Myers of Glovesville, NY.

Willard Yellorday

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Willard Yellorday, 81, died May 16, 2008 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

Joseph M. Piland

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Joseph M. Piland, 91, originally from Milwaukee, died May 20, 2008, in his home. He was the widower of Eleanor Thompson Piland.

Piland was a long standing member of Port Norfolk Baptist Church, a World War II veteran and retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

Survivors include his sons, Joseph T. (Tommy) Piland and Larry M. Piland; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, by the Rev. Terry L. Taylor. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. George C. Sexton

RICH SQUARE n George Cleophus “Clee” Sexton, 85, a native of Northampton

County, died May 18, 2008 at Rich Square Health Care Center.

Sexton was a member of Branches Chapel Missionary Baptist Church,

Rich Square and retired saw operator from Jim Brown Basket Company, George.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Sexton of the home; children, Clifton Sexton of Suffolk, Va., James Sexton of Greensboro, Bettie Moore of Paterson, NJ, and Michael Sexton of Hobgood; a brother, Trent Sexton of Bronx, NY; a sister, Annie B. Sexton of Rich Square; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. 

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Branches Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Rich Square, by the Rev. Tony Flood Sr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Rich Square, is in charge.

Clarence Futrell

AHOSKIE – Clarence Futrell, 71, a native of Hertford County, died May 16, 2008 at Guardian Care Nursing

Futrell was a member of Zion Grove Baptist Church.  He

was a retired welder from Newport News Shipyard.

Survivors include his wife, Verdale Futrell of Ahoskie; one son, Clarence Futrell Jr. of Seaboard; eight daughters, Janet Liverman, Edna Futrell, Mildred Moore, Shirley Parker and Rosa Parker all of Ahoskie, Tammy Ashby of Norfolk, Va., Linda Tibbs of Maryland and Jacqueline Moody of Gates; four brothers, Roy Lee Futrell of Woodland, Raymond Futrell of Norfolk, Melvin Futrell and Herman Futrell, both of Maryland; six sisters, Helen Futrell of Chesapeake, Sallie Barnes and Sarah Vaughan, both of Hampton, Marie Joyner, Mae Ella Grant and Geneva Parker, all of St. John and Sadie Suarez of Bronx, NY;  a host of grandchildren; and great grandchildren.

Jonathan Smith

AHOSKIE – Jonathan Smith, a native of McClellanville, SC, died May 20, 2008 at Sentara Careplex, Hampton, Va.

Smith was employed with Precon Marine Inc.

Survivors include  his wife, Vickie Lee of Ahoskie; one son, Coby Smith of

McClellanville; two daughters, Dee Smith and Sheia

Smith, both of McClellanville;  three brothers, Frank Smith

and Robert Lee Smith, both of Hawaii and William Smith of

South Carolina; one sister, Anette Smith of New York; and five

grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church Powellsville by Rev. John W.
