FAYETTEVILLE – Chowan University’s softball team added a pair to the win column Monday.
The Hawks defeated Fayetteville State University 9-1 and 10-8 to improve to 5-1 early in the season.
“In the first game, Shellie Wimpey was phenomenal,” said second-year CU softball boss Mandi Balduff. “She kept them off the bases.
“Also, our bats woke up,” she added. “When we got them down, we decided to keep them there. They’re the type of team that if you let them up, they can bite you.”
The Hawks beat out 11 hits in the first game win. Sophomore Megan Bass was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 while Brooke Owens checked in at 3-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in and two runs scored. Allie Kolezynski had two hits, three runs scored and a pair of stolen bases.
Wimpey meanwhile picked up her second win of the season while scattering five hits and striking out six.
In the second game, the Hawk bats stayed awake as they put together a season-high 15 hits while beating the Broncos 10-8.
“Just like at Pfeiffer on Sunday, our freshman pitcher struggled in one inning and the game was closer than it should have been,” Balduff said. “We were still able to use our hitting to create runs.
“We bunted the ball for base hits quite a bit,” she added. “I think that created havoc for their defense.”
The Hawks were paced offensively by Owen who checked in at 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Tricia Gorman was 3-for-4 during the second game while Alex Allen, Melissa Woodruff and Bass all collected two hits.
Kolezynski grabbed win number three on the mound. She tossed a complete game, giving up eight hits, eight runs and striking out seven.
The Hawks will be on the road again Saturday when they travel to Erskine College.
