Bears bow out

KINSTON – Kinston knocked off Hertford County 78-41 in the sectional semifinal here Wednesday night.

The Vikings, who are the defending 3-A state champions, built an early lead (20-8) after one quarter and held a 41-18 halftime edge.

Antonio Vaughan led the Bears with 11 points while Petey Boone was the only other Hertford County player in double figures with 10 points, including three three-pointers.

Jordan Jones had eight points while Dontez Tyler chipped in four. Rounding out the scoring were Dekimis Perry (3), D’Issac Jordan (3) and Shabazz Atkins (2).

Kinston was led by North Carolina Tarheel signee Reggie Bullock with 16 and Marquez Jones, who also had 16.

“We made it to the second round of the state playoffs which is a big accomplishment,” said HCHS basketball boss Charles Simmons. “Kinston is very good and will be tough to beat.

“I am pleased with the season overall,” he added. “We were young this season and will use what we have learned for next year.”

Despite starting one junior, three sophomore and a freshman, the Bears went 18-8 this season and were the Northeastern Coastal Conference tournament champions.
