Lady Barons take three

GATESVILLE – Gates County rolled to a trio of softball victories recently.
The Red Barons defeated North Edgecombe, Southeast Halifax and Louisburg and in the process improved to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in the Tar-Roanoke Conference.
The Red Barons defeated North Edgecombe 15-0 thanks to a barrage of runs in the first, third and fourth innings.
In the first frame, the Lady Barons scored four runs and then added five in the third and six in the fourth.
Holly Bagley tossed a no-hitter during the game, allowing just four walks while striking out six. Bagley was 1-for-2 with an RBI at the plate.
Leading the offense was Bobbi Doughtie, who was 3-for-3 with four RBIs and a double. Sarah Blanchard was 3-for-3 with two RBIs during the contest.
Kim Umphlett was 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored while Ashley Brown was 2-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases.
Earlier, the Lady Barons had rolled past Southeast Halifax 18-0.
Gates County sent 17 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored 12 runs to take an early lead from which they never looked back.
Bagley tossed three innings in that contest and allowed just one hit while striking out seven.
Erica Bradley led the offense with a 3-for-3 day that included a homerun and a double as well as five RBIs and four runs scored.
Doughtie was an impressive 3-for-3 as well scoring two runs and plating two RBIs while Julie Askew was a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Umphlett was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored as well as one RBI while Sarah Askew was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Red Barons’ coach Jonathan Hayes also saw his team roll to a 13-0 win over Louisburg High School.
In that contest, Hillary Bunch pitched five innings allowing just two hits and walking one while striking out seven.
Gates County scored two runs in the first inning, four in the second, five in the third and two in the fourth to secure the victory.
Bradley and Ashley Brown were each 3-for-3 during the contest. Bradley added five RBIs with a double and triple while Brown had a pair of stolen bases.
Bagley was also perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Umphlett was 1-for-1 with a double and an RBI.
Amanda Brown was 1-for-3 with four RBIs.
