Sidney Mitchell

Sidney Richard Mitchell, age 76, of the 500 block of Rawls Road, died August 25, 2009, at his home, after battling a long illness of Parkinson’s disease.
Sidney was born on August 22, 1933, in Bertie County, a son of the late Sophie Rawls Mitchell and Percy and Margaret Mitchell. He was a member and deacon of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Aulander and was a North Carolina Farm Bureau agent for 32 years. He served in the U. S. Army from 1957-1963.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Jean Rawls Mitchell; two stepdaughters, Frances Rawls Evans and husband, Nicky, of Murfreesboro and Wanda Rawls King and husband, Jim of Ahoskie; two step grandchildren, Jamie King and wife, Melissa of Ahoskie and Sarah King of Ahoskie; five sisters, Patricia M. Penwell and Winnifred Mitchell, both of Aulander, Stella M. Hofler and husband, Willie of Gatesville, Jo Sharion Winn and husband, Tommy of Woodbridge, VA and Julia M. Dixon and husband, Robert of Grifton, NC; two brothers, Wilson L. Mitchell of Aulander, and Julius C. Mitchell of Bluffton, SC. Also surviving are 14 nieces and nephews and 17 great nieces and great nephews. Besides his parents, Sidney was predeceased by a sister, Lenora M. Hughes and an infant brother, Percy M. Mitchell.
A celebration of life service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 27 in the Ashley Memorial Chapel at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home in Ahoskie with the Rev. Dr. Jimmy Jarrell officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens. The family received friends at the funeral home from 7-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
