Joseph Randolph Umphlett, 81, of Middle Swamp Road, Gates, died Tuesday, December 1, 2009 in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.
A native of Gates County, he was a farmer, a member of Middle Swamp Baptist Church and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include six sisters, Norene Taylor of Gates, Cordis Dudley of Chesapeake, VA, Lois Lawrence of Suffolk, VA, Marian Spivey of Gatesville, Faye Hoffler of Sunbury and Alta Gray of Lakeland, Fla.; and three brothers, Ralph Umphlett of Manteo and Leon Umphlett and M.Q. Umphlett, both of Gates.
A funeral was held Friday, Dec. 4 at Middle Swamp Baptist Church. Rev. Burt Pearce officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Friends may join the family at the home of his brother, Leon, 250 Middle Swamp Road, Gates.
