Fourth quarter rally paces GCHS

AHOSKIE – Gates County came close to eliminating the defending champions.
Then the Lady Red Barons came close to finishing last.
Gates County rallied from a four-point deficit in the fourth quarter to knock off Northampton County High School – East 48-30 in the Consolation Game of the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald Holiday Classic sponsored by United Country Joe Murray Realty.
Trailing by four as the period started, the Lady Barons started the fourth quarter with a 8-0 run. Danielle Adams started the spurt with a pair of free throws which were followed by back-to-back triples from Erika Bradley to give the Lady Barons a 30-26 edge.
Northampton-East responded with a free throw, but Gates County rolled off the next seven unanswered. Adams had another pair of free throws followed by a Wiggins triple and a Bradley field goal that gave the Barons a 37-27 lead.
Patrice Williams fired back with a triple for the Lady Rams, but Gates County again rolled off 11 in a row to seal the victory.
Wiggins started the spurt with a hoop at the 2:57 mark of the final quarter followed by hoops from Bradley and Denene Hayer. A Bradley free throw gave the Red Barons a comfortable 44-30 lead with 1:09 to play.
The final score came on a Wiggins hoop with 17 ticks left on the clock as the Lady Barons sealed the win 48-30.
The Lady Barons placed Wiggins on the All-Tournament Team following the event while Northampton-East’s Williams was likewise honored.
