DWI blamed in Bertie wreck

ELM GROVE – One person was injured in an accident during the early morning hours of Monday in the Elm Grove community just a few miles from Askewville.
Bobby Nelson Byrum, 28, of Askewville was injured and taken to Bertie Memorial Hospital and was later transferred to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville via EastCare for his injuries.
Byrum was listed in fair condition at Pitt Memorial Monday afternoon.
According to a report filed by North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper M.D. Simmons, Byrum was operating a Chevrolet pickup truck traveling on Elm Grove Road when he ran off the right shoulder. Trooper Simmons’ report said Byrum over-corrected, causing the vehicle to cross the center line before it went back off the right hand side of the road, struck a ditch and overturned.
After the incident, Byrum was charged with driving left of center, careless and reckless driving and driving while impaired.
