PCA ladies finish fourth

AHOSKIE – Pungo Christian Academy finished fourth in the Lt. Nick Brantley Scholarship Tournament.
The fifth annual event, sponsored jointly by the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald and United Country Joe Murray Realty, concluded Friday night.
During the fourth place contests, held at Roanoke-Chowan Community College, the Lady Raiders knocked off Lawrence Academy 28-10 to secure the fourth place finish.
Melanie Harris started the scoring for PCA with a hoop four minutes into the contest, but it took just 50 seconds before Hayden Thompson answered with two free throws for Lawrence.
Back-to-back hoops by Allison Armstrong over the next two minutes pushed Pungo ahead 6-2 with 2:28 to play in the first period.
Thompson, however, responded with a hoop that closed the gap to two.
Armstrong closed the quarter by hitting 1-of-2 from the free throw line to give the Lady Raiders a 7-4 lead at the end of the first period.
Jenna Sadler opened the second quarter with a hoop that was followed by an Armstrong bucket that pushed the lead to 11-4.
The Lady Raiders continued the run over the next six minutes with Armstrong adding five additional points and Sadler another deuce to push Pungo’s lead to 18-4.
Priscilla Lunsford finally ended the spurt with a hoop for the Lady Warriors with 2:09 to play in the quarter and then Hallie Corbett scored for Lawrence as they cut the lead to 18-8 with 1:40 to play.
Harris hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to push Pungo’s lead to 21-8.
The third quarter saw Pungo outscore Lawrence 5-0 with Armstrong contributing three points and Sadler two.
Thompson then scored to open the fourth quarter as Lawrence closed to 26-10, but Armstrong added another hoop to make it 28-10.
Armstrong led all scorers with 17 points while Harris added seven and Sadler six. Thompson led Lawrence with six points.
