REPUBLICAN – Fire has destroyed two acres and some personal property today near this Bertie County community.
According to Bertie Emergency Management Coordinator Rickey Freeman, the fire started on the 700 block of Republican Road, which is less than a mile from School Road.
“From what I’ve been able to gather thus far someone was burning trash or doing some cleaning and, with the windy conditions, the fire got away from him,” Freeman said.
He said the fire burned an abandon house, three vehicles and approximately two acres of woodland.
No one was injured in the blaze, which was nearly under control as of 4 p.m.
The North Carolina Forestry Service, Askewville Fire Department, Windsor Fire Department, Lewiston Woodville Fire Department, Emergency Management Agency and Bertie County Sheriff’s Office responded to the fire.
