South Creek rallies by HC

WINDSOR – South Creek rallied from four runs down to beat Hertford County 5-4 in pool play at Monday’s Bertie Easter Tournament.
Hertford County opened the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Brandon Taylor reached first on catcher’s interference for the Bears. Brandon Terry then walked before both runners advanced on an error.
Taylor scored on a Marvin Harrell RBI-single to left which sent Terry to third. Harrell took second on the throw home.
Terry and Harrell both made it home safely thanks to a Daniel Merritt two-run double to left-center field. Merritt then scored on a Brandon Warren RBI-single to left, giving the Bears a 4-0 lead.
South Creek responded with one run in the top of the fourth and added two more in the fifth to close the gap to 4-3.
The Cougars scored the game-winning runs in the top of the sixth stanza.
In the bottom of the sixth, Terry walked and Bobby Merritt singled to center. With one out, Daniel Merritt grounded into a fielder’s choice and then a pop fly ended the inning.
The Bears went down in order in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Tyler Pryor pitched five innings for HCHS, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out four. Harrell tossed two innings, allowing two runs on four hits and suffering the loss. He struck out three.
The Bears recorded eight hits with Harrell and Daniel Merritt accounting for half that total with two hits each. Warren, Bobby Merritt, Brock Merritt and Taylor had one hit each.
The loss dropped HCHS to 11-7 overall.
