Lady Warriors competing well

MERRY HILL – Lawrence Academy has had a busy volleyball season.
The Lady Warriors are 2-8, but have been competitive in most of their outings and had solid play from many of their still young players.
Against Rocky Mount, the Lady Warriors suffered a straight-set loss to the 2-A squad. The visiting team won 25-11, 25-20 and 25-18.
Despite the setback, first-year skipper Shannon Van Staalduinen got solid play from her team.
Hayden Thompson recorded six kills during the match while Giovanna Conigliaro had five assists, three aces and a kill. Jordyn Lyle and Chelsea Ginn had one kill each.
Meeting Pungo Christian Academy, Lawrence forced a fourth game before falling to the visiting Lady Raiders. PCA grabbed a 30-28, 19-25, 27-25, 25-21 victory in a hard-fought match.
During that meeting, the Lady Warriors had four players with a perfect serving day including Heather Hughes, Janay Ward, Holly McNair and Emma Conigliaro.
In addition, Conigliaro had four assists and a dig while Giovanna Conigliaro recorded six assists, three aces and a kill. Holly McNair added nine kills while Thompson had nine kills and four aces.
The Lady Warriors had a tough outing with Hobgood Academy, one of the top teams in the Tarheel Independent Conference. The Lady Raiders claimed a straight set win 25-16, 25-16 and 25-13.
In that outing, the Lady Warriors were led by Ward, who had six service points and three aces. Giovanna Conigliaro added one ace on six service points.
The Lady Warriors also suffered a setback to Columbia High School. The public school squad won 25-18, 25-23, 20-25 and 25-15.
McNair had eight service points, five aces and four kills in that matchup while Thompson had seven service points with six aces and a kill.
