WINTON – Hertford County Public Schools Interim Superintendent Julius Walker is settling in nicely.

During last week’s meeting of the Hertford County Board of Education, Walker told the board’s members he was enjoying his new role.

“The transition has been smooth,” said Walker, who began his role following the departure of Dr. John Fahey in February. “That started with you. You set the tone at our first meeting – very cordial, very professional.”

Walker said he had met with all district level administrators and principals. He said he met with the principals in their offices at the school level.

“You have hard-working, conscientious people,” he told the board. “Your academic team works well together.”

The interim superintendent was also pleased with some of the work that is already under way in the district.

“Professional development in this district is well-planned and organized,” he said. “All of the people in the district work together as a team. I have not once heard the ‘I’ syndrome from one of your personnel.”

In addition, Walker said he was already beginning to work with district personnel to discuss the budget. He said the matter would be coming before the board in the near future for consideration.

Walker also said he felt the next permanent superintendent would be getting a quality staff.

“You have some excellent people in this district and they know how to do what is best for children,” he said.

And, because of their work, he said he feels comfortable.

“So far, it has gone well,” he said. “I feel right at home.”
