AHOSKIE – The Bears built a 6-0 lead here Tuesday.
The home team then had to hold off a rally from Currituck County High School to claim a 6-5 Northeastern Coastal Conference baseball victory on Senior Night.
The Bears opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Bobby Merritt and Tyler Burden each drew a walk. The two then came around to score on a Marvin Harrell double to left-centerfield. Harrell went to third on the throw home and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tucker Warren.
The Bears added three more in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Merritt singled to center and went to second on a Burden sacrifice bunt. Merritt moved to third on a Harrell single and scored on an error on the play.
Ackerman Grace then was hit by a pitch and Warren singled on the infield to load the bases.
Terry was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in Harrell. Eric Ortiz then drew a bases-loaded walk allowing Grace to score and giving the Bears a 6-0 lead.
Currituck responded with four runs in the sixth and another in the seventh. The Knights had runners on second and third with two out in the seventh, but a groundout ended the game.
Harrell worked five and one-third innings on the mound before giving way to Burden.
“Harrell had a great start for us on the mound,” HCHS skipper Chris Towell said. “He kept us in the game.
“On offense, we took advantage of key hits and we put the ball in play,” he added.
Hertford County moved to 14-5 overall and 8-3 in the league.
They travel to Bertie today (Thursday). First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
