WINDSOR – A nine-year-old child was bit by a dog here Tuesday afternoon.

According to Bertie County Sheriff John Holley, the child was passing through someone’s yard when the mixed-breed dog bit him on the calf.

Holley said there were two puncture wounds, including one deeper in the skin, and the child was transported to Vidant Bertie Hospital.

“We are still investigating what happened at this time, but we believe the child was taking a shortcut through someone’s yard and the dog bit him,” Holley said.

The incident happened on Jerry’s Lane just off N.C. 308 near the Bertie Early College High School.
