Chowan University and Elizabeth City State University each handed down sanctions in the wake of a skirmish after the teams played football Oct. 20.

The two teams – then co-leaders of the Northern Division of the CIAA – met on the football field Oct. 20 at Roebuck Stadium on the ECSU campus. Following the game, there was a scuffle between the two teams while shaking hands.

Chowan University Athletic Director Dennis Helsel confirmed the school did self-impose sanctions following the incident and they were accepted by the CIAA Commissioner’s office.

The self-imposed penalties included suspension of players and fines for the institution.

A spokesperson for the CIAA confirmed that both Chowan and Elizabeth City State provided sanctions which were accepted by the league.

“Both schools provided the conference self-imposed suspensions of the involved student-athletes and the conference accepted those suspensions, with the addition of required community service hours (20) of those students to the Make-A-Wish Foundation,” said Assistant Commissioner of Communications Shera White.

The student-athletes at Chowan served their suspension last week against Virginia State University.
