AHOSKIE – A routine traffic stop here Monday resulted in charges lodged against two Ahoskie men.
Ahoskie Police Chief Troy Fitzhugh reported that Darius Davonte Jenkins, 21, and Robert Earl Williams Jr., 26, both residents of Daly Road, were charged after marijuana and a concealed weapon were found in the vehicle stopped by APD K-9 Sgt. Michael Kellett.
Fitzhugh said Kellett performed vehicle stop on East Main Street near Lloyd Street.
“Upon exiting his vehicle, Sgt. Kellett said he noticed the two occupants moving around in the front seat of the vehicle,” Fitzhugh stated. “Sgt. Kellett asked the driver for his license and registration, at which time he observed an assault rifle on the back seat.”
As the driver (Jenkins) reached over to open the glove box, Kellett noticed, in plain view, a handgun.
“Sgt. Kellett gave both the driver and passenger a direct order not to move,” Fitzhugh said.
Back up officers arrived on the scene – Patrolmen Jessie Mizelle, Clifton Sexton and Johnnie Hoggard – at which time the pistol was removed from the vehicle.
Jenkins was charged with possession of marijuana (up to 1/2 ounce) and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Williams was charged with carrying a concealed weapon.
Fitzhugh said both men were cited with misdemeanor charges and released.
