AHOSKIE – Two men escaped unharmed early Thursday night when approached by an armed suspect on Main and Maple streets in Ahoskie near Wells Fargo Bank.

This crime was solved quickly as the Ahoskie Police were able to obtain solid information on the suspect and made the arrest Saturday.

Rashad Quadre Harmon, 21, of 301 Newsome Grove Road, Ahoskie, was taken into custody by APD Sgt. Tyrone Ruffin.

APD Chief Troy Fitzhugh said Ruffin received information on Saturday concerning Harmon’s whereabouts. He drove to that area where Harmon was located and made the arrest without incident.

Harmon was placed in the Hertford County Detention Center on the charges of attempted armed robbery and resist, delay and obstruct (a police officer). His bond was set at $50,000 secured and Harmon is scheduled to make his first appearance on Tuesday in Hertford County District Court.

The case against Harmon was originally built when an APD officer noticed a man running at a brisk pace on Main Street on Thursday and was able to question that individual.

“My officer, at the time of speaking to the individual, had no way of knowing what had previously occurred,” Fitzhugh said of the incident where the two victims were confronted by an armed individual. “However, my officer knew from his training that something just wasn’t right, so he took the individual to the station where he obtained his name, address and contact information. We had nothing at that point to hold the individual on, but told him we would come looking for him if we did learn of a crime being committed at or near the area where he was seen running.”

A shade over two hours later, the two victims of the alleged attempted robbery came to the Ahoskie Police station to report being victimized.

“They said they didn’t immediately come to the PD because they were riding around looking for the suspect,” Fitzhugh said. “They said they were able to fight off the suspect, even though he was brandishing a firearm.”

“I commend Lt. Adam Benton for being so alert; his training paid off,” Fitzhugh said.
