Alice H. Hofler

SUNBURY – Alice Hurdle Hofler, 95, of 501 NC 32 South, Sunbury, died Tuesday, October 15, 2013 in Winslow Memorial Home, Elizabeth City.

Mrs. Hofler was born in Chowan County and was the daughter of the late Jerome West and Flora Ward Hurdle.  A homemaker, she was the oldest member of Sandy Cross Baptist Church, where she had served as a Sunday School teacher, and had been active in the Georgia Dean Riddick Circle of the W.M.U.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Forest Riddick Hofler; a daughter, Gloria Hofler Askew and her husband Sidney; a sister, Delma Hurdle Dale; and a granddaughter-in-law, Jennifer A. Hofler.

Surviving are her daughter, Linda Hofler; her son, Charles Hofler and his wife Barbara, all of Sunbury; two sisters, Florine H. Weeks of Elizabeth City and Carolyn Sanders of Newport News, VA; a brother, D.T. Hurdle of Belvidere; four grandchildren, Gayle McAllister and her husband Albert, Wanda Brothers and her husband Chuck, Thomas Hofler and his wife Caroline, and Courtney Martone and her husband Peter; and five great-grandchildren, Richie Brothers, Caroline Brown, and Jordan, Forest, and Holden Hofler.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 17 at 3:00 p.m. in Sandy Cross Baptist Church by the Rev. Terry Jones.  A private burial will follow in the church cemetery with Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesvillle, handling arrangements.  Friends may join the family in the social hall immediately following the church service on Thursday, and all other times at the residence.
