RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Transportation recently awarded a contract for a project to improve travel on U.S. 258 in Northampton County by repaving the two-lane road.

A $2.7 million contract was awarded to Rose Brothers Paving Co. Inc of Ahoskie for the project, which includes plans to resurface a 14.5 mile-long section of U.S. 258 from N.C. 305 in Rich Square, north to U.S. 158 southwest of Murfreesboro.

Once the road is repaved, new pavement markings will be installed.

Work on the project is expected to begin in August, with final completion no later than Nov. 21.

Lane closures will be in place on the project and traffic will be directed through the construction site with flaggers and a pilot vehicle.

No work will take place at night, on Sundays or over holidays.

This is one of the 25 road and bridge contracts worth $71 million recently awarded by NCDOT for projects across North Carolina. The contracts were awarded to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The low bids received on the projects were 1.2 percent, or $845,000 below NCDOT estimates.
