WINTON – Hertford County Register of Deeds Melanie Storey is issuing a warning to county residents about a deed scam occurring in other parts of North Carolina.
Storey said a company identified as Record Transfer Services offers to obtain a current grant deed and property assessment profile for homeowners. The fee for this service is $83.
Local citizens need to be aware that this information is public record and can be obtained for a minimal fee from the Hertford County Register of Deeds Office. Those needing more information can call 252-358-7850.
Storey said that the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office has gone to court to stop similar mailings regarding this type of solicitation, to include one mailed to state residents 18 months ago by another California based company known as Local Records Office.
If you receive a similar type mailing or if you are aware of an individual who paid the $83 fee charged by Record Transfer Services, contact Julie Daniel at the North Carolina Department of Justice Consumer Protection Division at 919-716-6000.
