Additional charges are pending.

Davenport was jailed under a $250,000 secured bond and is scheduled to make her first court appearance on April 7.

Fitzhugh said his office became involved in the case when a town citizen came to the Ahoskie Police on March 17 to report a case of identity theft. APD Patrolman Clifton Whitby took the initial report and forwarded the complaint to APD Detective Justin Farmer, who handled the ensuing investigation.

“Based on the information shared by the victim in regards to this case, Detective Farmer went to local businesses to view video footage of the alleged incidents of purchases taking place by use of a credit card that the victim alleged she had no knowledge of obtaining,” Fitzhugh said. “After reviewing the videos, Detective Farmer recognized the suspect, leading us to draw the warrants for her arrest.”

The Police Chief added that evidence linking Davenport to the crimes was collected at her residence on the night of the arrest. He said that evidence was legally obtained through the use of a search warrant.

Since Davenport’s residence is located in the county, the Sheriff’s Office assisted with serving the arrest and search warrants.

“I would like to commend the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office, Patrolman Clifton Whitby and Detective Justin Farmer for a job well done,” said Fitzhugh. “I need to take this opportunity to encourage our citizens to keep a check on their personal and financial information due to an increase in the number of financial crimes being reported.”

According to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, Davenport has three previous arrests.

In June of 1993 she was given a suspended sentence and placed on probation for misdemeanor financial card fraud in Hertford County.

She served 60 months of probation on a suspended sentence and was ordered to perform community service on an August, 2009 felony charge of larceny by employee in Northampton County.

In January of 2012 she was arrested in Pitt County for misdemeanor larceny by employee. Again she was given a suspended sentence and placed on probation as well as performing community service.

According to her arrest record, she goes by several different names, to include Joy White Davenport, Susan J. Davenport, Joy Davenport, Susan Joy Davenport, Susan Joy White Davenport, Susan Joy White-Davenport, and Susan Joy White.
