CONWAY – Katina Joyner of Conway said she likes the “Bucks” family of lottery tickets. Odds are, after scratching off a $750,000 top prize on a $10 Jumbo Bucks ticket, she likes them even more.
Joyner, a corrections officer, had just finished working a 12-hour shift when she stopped at the Park N Shop on East Main Street in Conway. That’s where she scratched her lucky ticket – and discovered how much she won.
“It’s once in a lifetime,” Joyner said as she claimed her prize money. “It was unbelievable. I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me because I had been awake so long.”
“It’s got to be a dream,” Joyner recalled thinking to herself. “But it was for real.”
Joyner said her $519,378 in after-tax winnings will make a big difference for her family.
“My plans and goals and realizations are to buy a house, pay off my car, and set aside for my kids’ education,” she said.
Ticket sales made it possible for the lottery to raise more than half a billion dollars for the state this year. For details on how $7.5 million in lottery funds have made a difference in Northampton County, click on the “Where the Money Goes” tab on the lottery’s website.
For prizes greater than $5,000, 25% federal tax and 5.75% state tax are automatically withheld.
