Walter C. White

COLERAIN – Walter Credle White of Colerain, NC passed away on Friday morning October 23, 2015. Walter was born on Sept 1, 1936 to Mary and James White.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce; his brother, James; his sons, Walt and his wife, Sonja, and Wilson and his fiancée, Cindy; his extended family, Kay Edwards and Albert Colwell; and his grandchildren, Steven, Spencer, Matt, Savannah and Katie.

Walter began his career with Carolina Telephone & Telegraph Company in 1955 as a Central Office Repairman and retired as District Customer Service Manager after 43 years of distinguished service. In 2000, Walter and Joyce fulfilled his lifelong dream of returning to his boyhood home, Colerain, NC.

Walter was well known as an accomplished pewter smith. He learned his craft by watching pewterers make spoons in Colonial Williamsburg in the early 1970s. Walter went on to design and craft pewter spoons, knives, bowls, mugs, plates, candle sticks and belt buckles. Walter often gave his pewter to his friends out of love and those pieces will be cherished for generations.

Walter was a Life Member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and an officer in the Military Order of the Stars and Bars. He participated in many Civil War living history events. Walter and his friends built authentic replicas of Civil War artifacts and devices. He donated some of these to area Civil War museums. Walter was an avid student of Eastern North Carolina Civil War history and was a frequent lecturer at local historical programs.

Walter was a member of Ahoskie United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 from 1-1:45 pm at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service in Ahoskie. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm at the Chapel of Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service. Interment will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in Colerain, NC. Rev. Bill Haddock, Jr. will be officiating the service.
