VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – A Murfreesboro man was found stabbed to death on a Virginia Beach street early Sunday morning and a former Chowan University student is allegedly the murderer.
Virginia Beach Police reported they responded to the 5600 block of Doddington Court shortly past 1 a.m. on April 10 to what was first thought to be a “shots fired” call. However, upon arrival of the first police unit, a male was found in the street suffering from stab wounds.
That victim was later identified as 22-year-old Jamel Rakel Powell, whose address is listed as Union Street in Murfreesboro. Powell was pronounced dead at the scene.
The ensuing investigation developed 23-year-old Candra Elizabeth Williams as a suspect. Williams was arrested and charged with second degree murder.
Williams, according to Virginia Beach Police, listed a Richmond, VA address.
Meanwhile, the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald learned that Williams attended Chowan University. That information was confirmed by the University, saying Williams was not currently enrolled at Chowan and last attended classes during the Fall 2015 semester.
Virginia Beach Police Public Affairs Officer Tonya Pierce told the News-Herald that Williams and Powell “were known to each other.” However, it’s not clear at this time how they came to be at the same place at the same time this past weekend.
As to a motive behind the fatal stabbing, Pierce said that information will be part of the ongoing investigation and will be released by the Commonwealth Attorney for the Virginia Beach District.
The case remains under investigation by the Virginia Beach Police Homicide Squad with Detective M. Marsolais as the lead investigator.
Doddington Court is located off Newtown Road in the Lake Edward area of Virginia Beach.
