AULANDER – An Aulander man is being held in the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail without bond after officers with the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office say he was involved in an incident from which a woman later died later Sunday evening.
Sheriff John Holley told TV news sources on Sunday that Thurman Wiggins, 56, of 512 West Main Street in Aulander has been placed under arrest and charged with murder.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to the Main Street location just after 7 p.m. Sunday to what has been described as a domestic incident.
When officers arrived on the scene they found the woman – whose name has not been released as of Monday afternoon – injured. The woman was rushed by Bertie County EMS to Vidant Bertie Hospital in Windsor, where she later was pronounced dead. The cause of death has not been officially released.
Holley said they do not believe anyone else was involved in the case, but that the incident is still under investigation by his office.
