Ahoskie Juniors get first win

AHOSKIE – Ahoskie Post 102’s bats finally awoke and the junior American Legion team posted its first win of the season, 10-5, over the Cary Bulls here Saturday morning.
Ahoskie opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jordan Robinson singled to centerfield and went to second base on a wild pitch before advancing to third on a Trevor Lee groundout. Evan Lassiter then drew a walk and when Coach David Ellis called for the double-steal, Robinson scored as Lassiter took second and third on the same play. Lassiter scored Ahoskie’s second run on a Frankie Reppy groundout RBI and Ahoskie led it 2-0 after one complete.
Post 102 added four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Gabriel Correa and Trent Munford opened with back-to-back singles and Zeb Askew reached first on an error to load the bases. Robinson reached on a fielder’s choice as Correa scored. Munford and Askew scored on Trevor Lee’s two-run single to center and Lee later scored on a Lassiter RBI double into the gap in right centerfield. Ahoskie was up 6-0 after two innings.
Cary scored a run in the top of the third to make it 6-1 after two-and-a-half.
Ahoskie tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth when Askew was hit by a pitch and went to third when Robinson singled to center. Askew later scored on an error to make it 7-1, Post 102, after four.
Cary crept closer with four runs in the top of the sixth to make it a two-run game, 7-5 before Ahoskie scored its final three runs in the bottom of the frame. Askew walked, stole second and went to third on an error. He would score on a Lee RBI single to center. Lee then stole second and scored on Lassiter’s RBI single to center. Lassiter came home on a wild pitch for the last run of the game. Cary didn’t score in the seventh and Post 102 had claimed their first win of the year.
Hunter Mitchell pitched five-and-a-third innings for the win, allowing five runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Lee pitched the final inning and two-thirds.
Ahoskie had 10 hits: two by Lee along with three runs-batted-in, two by Lassiter with two RBI. Robinson and Edward Bradley had two each while Correa and Munford had one hit apiece.
“It’s good to get our first win,” said Ellis. “We finally hit the ball and the defense played great. Hunter also pitched a great game for us.
Ahoskie is now 1-5 and 1-3 in the conference. Later Saturday, Ahoskie started a game with Windsor Post 37, but the game was called in the bottom of the second inning due to weather and will be resumed at a later date. Ahoskie’s next game is Thursday at Edenton.
